O ensino artístico, desde que abandonou as oficinas dos mestres para integrar a Academia, tem sido alvo de inúmeros debates por vezes suscitando divergências. O discurso artístico contemporâneo exige uma consciência do presente que não prevalece no aparelho educativo mais institucional, o qual, por natureza, é demasiado moroso na resposta às urgências do presente. Os programas e unidades curriculares nas escolas e universidades tradicionais demoram a mudar e a adaptar-se, os seus métodos de avaliação, muitas vezes modelados a partir das Humanidades, são desadequados e contestados. Desde os finais dos anos 60 assistimos ao lento desenvolvimento de modelos alternativos de educação artística, promovidos por instituições dedicadas à exposição e investigação artística. Na vanguarda desta prática esteve o Independent Study Program do Whitney Museum of American Art, a partir do qual outros projetos têm sido desenvolvidos em todo o mundo. O que eles têm em comum é o abandono de uma estrutura curricular, a crítica de grupo e a centralidade da discussão de temas e textos atuais. Com esta conversa vamos conhecer três modelos de educação artística alternativa e ponderar as suas vantagens.

Art education, ever since it abandoned the masters' workshops to become part of the University system, has been the subject of countless arguments and, sometimes, the source of disagreement. The contemporary artistic discourse requires an awareness of the present that does not prevail in the more institutional education apparatus, which are by nature, too slow to provide answers to the urgencies of the present. Programs and curricular units in traditional schools and universities are slow to change and adapt, their evaluation methods, often modeled after the Liberal Arts, are inadequate and contested. Since the late 1960s, we see the slow development of alternative models of artistic education, promoted by institutions devoted to art exhibition and research. Leading the pack is the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art, from which other projects have been developed all over the world. These alternative study programs share common practices: they bypass a traditional curriculum structure, employ the group critique and focus on the discussion of current themes and texts. With this conversation we will get to know three models of alternative art education and ponder their upside.
