Podemos ver agora que a primeira metade, convulsionada pelas terríveis e prolongadas guerras civis da Europa, foi retomada com a culminação e o lento suicídio do imperialismo. A segunda metade foi marcada indelevelmente pelos resultados. As guerras e as revoluções desde 1945, dezenas delas, tiveram suas raízes na rutura dos grandes impérios que começaram então - não apenas os impérios da Europa Ocidental, desde a década de 1950 até a década de 1970, mas também o império russo no início da década de 1990. Na primeira metade do século XX, autocracias e ditaduras falaram em nome das massas, manipulando-as, dando-lhes os seus slogans. Mas na segunda metade do século não houve uma reação intensa. O protesto tornou-se o motor da mudança política. Às vezes, atrasado por forças policiais secretas efetivas e medo público. No entanto, uma década passada em pleno século XXI, o processo chegou até aos países árabes, com seus sistemas ativos de espiões e informadores. A realização chave é que as pessoas podem sair às ruas, desafiar o estado e sobreviver. Nem sempre foram bem-sucedidos, é claro; um governo determinado o suficiente para permanecer no poder pode disparar contra os manifestantes e com o confronto - pelo menos temporariamente. Mas as chances mudaram. O sucesso é mais provável, estatisticamente, do lado de quem protesta do que do lado do estado. Em 2017, temos Trump nos EUA, Temer no Brasil, Theresa May em Inglaterra, Putin na Rússia, Angela Merkel na Alemanha. We can see now that the first half of the century, convulsed by Europe’s terrible and protracted civil wars, was taken up with the culmination and slow suicide of imperialismo. The second half was indelibly marked by the results. The wars and revolutions since 1945, dozens of them, have had their roots in the break-up of the great empires that started then – not just Western Europe’s empires, from the 1950s to the 1970s, but also the Russian empire in the early 1990s. In the first half of the twentieth century, autocracies and dictatorships spoke in the name of the masses, manipulating them, giving them their slogans. But in the second half of the century there was na intense reaction. Protest became the engine of political change. Sometimes, delayed by effective secret police forces and public fear, it moved slowly. However, a decade in to the twenty-first century the process has even reached the Arab countries, with their active systems of spies and informers. The key realization is that people can come out onto the streets and challenge the state, and survive. They haven’t always been successful, of course; a government determined enough to stay in power can shot the demonstrators down and with the confrontation – at least temporarily. But the odds have shifted. Successs is more likely, statistically, to be with the proterstors than with the state.
