As obras de arte, nomeadamente aquelas que trabalham a partir de material documental, podem oferecer um apelo particularmente desafiante para refletir sobre a realidade. Enquanto a ligação indexante à realidade que abordam garante ao som e à imagem uma credibilidade específica, a postura do artista, a sua escolha estética, temática e política, bem como a posição autorreflexiva, podem gerar uma avaliação crítica sobre a constituição dessa realidade. É neste ponto que a arte encontra a filosofia. A reflexão sobre a relação entre o mundo factual e a sua apropriação subjetiva, questionando as reivindicações hegemónicas de objetividade e autoridade e problematizando as contradições inerentes à sociedade, são, por imanência, questões filosóficas.
A presente edição de Problematizar a realidade – encontros entre arte e filosofia reúne um conjunto de seis sessões de discussão e quatro seminários, decorre na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e foca-se no momento em que a arte e a filosofia estabelecem diálogos produtivos, propondo abordagens diversificadas sobre o pensamento contemporâneo. Cada sessão de discussão parte da exibição parcial ou integral de obras de arte, acompanhada por uma reflexão conduzida por teóricos, investigadores ou artistas.
A terceira sessão de discussão acontece em janeiro e reúne o artista Philip Cartelli e o investigador Samir Gandesha numa reflexão suscitada pela exibição de Borom sarret (1963), da autoria de Ousmane Sembène, considerado o pai do cinema africano. O filme retrata um dia na vida de um condutor de carroças em Dakar (Senegal), cujo percurso sublinha a separação da cidade, entre os espaços pobres e os condomínios fechados. Nas palavras de Samir Gandesha, trata-se de um minimalismo formal com várias camadas de complexidade que revelam a violência estrutural, estabelecida e consolidada através das relações coloniais de classe e de género, que perduram no período pós-independência.
Philip Cartelli (EUA) é artista e investigador, cujo trabalho em filme e vídeo foi apresentado em festivais e outros eventos, incluindo: Locarno Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Visions du Réel (Nyon), Torino Film Festival, FIDMarseille e Art of the Real (Film at Lincoln Center, Nova Iorque). Cartelli foi participante no Whitney Independent Study Program (Nova Iorque) e é doutorado pela Harvard University (onde foi membro do Sensory Ethnography Lab) e pela École des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris). Atualmente, é Professor Associado no Department of Visual Arts do Wagner College (Nova Iorque).
Samir Gandesha (Canadá) é Professor Associado no Department of the Humanities e Diretor do Institute for the Humanities, ambos na Simon Fraser University (Canadá). Para além da autoria de artigos, capítulos de livros e entradas de enciclopédias, é editor de “Spectres of Fascism: Historical, Theoretical and International Perspectives” (Pluto Press, 2020), “Crossing Borders: Essays in Honour of Ian H. Angus, Beyond Phenomenology and Critique” (Arbeiter Ring, 2020, com Peyman Vahabzadeh), “Aesthetic Marx” (Bloomsbury Academic, 2017, com Johan F. Hartle), “Spell of Capital: Reification and Spectacle” (Amsterdam University Press, 2017, com Johan F. Hartle), “Arendt and Adorno: Political and Philosophical Investigations” (Stanford University Press, 2012, com Lars Rensmann), entre outros.

Artworks, especially those that comprise documentary material, can offer a particularly challenge to our sense of reality. While the indexical link to what they address grants images and sounds a specific credibility, the artist’s aesthetic, thematic and political choices and self-reflexive stance may generate a critical assessment of the very constitution of reality. At such point, art meets philosophy. To reflect on the relationship between the factual world and its subjective understanding, questioning hegemonic claims to objectivity and problematising the inherent contradictions of society are inherently philosophical issues.
The second edition of Problematising reality – Encounters between art and philoso-phy is a partnership between CAM – Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, IFILNOVA (Cine-Lab) / FCSH / UNL and Maumaus / Lumiar Cité. This is a series of six discussion sessions and four seminars taking place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, focusing on the moment when art and philosophy establish productive dialogues, proposing diverse ap-proaches to contemporary thought. Each discussion session departs from a partial or full exhibition of works of art in the medium of film, accompanied by a reflection led by theo-rists, researchers or artists.
The third discussion session takes place in January and brings together the artist and researcher Philip Cartelli and the researcher Samir Gandesha, in a reflection prompted by the viewing of Borom sarret (1963), by Ousmane Sembène, considered the father of African cinema. The film portrays a day in the life of a cart driver in Dakar (Senegal), whose journey highlights the city's separation between poor spaces and gated communities. In Samir Gandesha's words, it is a formal minimalism with several layers of complexity that reveal the structural violence, established and consolidated through colonial class and gender relations, which persist in the post-independence period.
Philip Cartelli (USA) is a moving-image artist and researcher whose film and video work has been presented at festivals and other events, including Locarno Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Visions du Réel, Torino Film Festival, FIDMarseille and Film at Lincoln Center’s Art of the Real. He holds a dual-PhD from Harvard University (where he was a member of the Sensory Ethnography Lab) and the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris) and was a participant in the Whitney Independent Study Program. He is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at Wagner College in New York City.
Samir Gandesha (Canada) is Professor of Modern European Thought and Culture and Director of the Institute for the Humanities at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Besides being author of numerous refereed articles in top-tier journals, chapters in edited volumes, and encyclopedia entries, he is the editor of ´Spectres of Fascism: Historical, Theoretical and International Perspectives’ (Pluto Press, 2020), ‘Crossing Borders: Essays in Honour of Ian H.
