As obras de arte, nomeadamente aquelas que trabalham a partir de material documental, podem oferecer um apelo particularmente desafiante para refletir sobre a realidade. Enquanto a ligação indexante à realidade que abordam garante ao som e à imagem uma credibilidade específica, a postura do artista, a sua escolha estética, temática e política, bem como a posição autorreflexiva, podem gerar uma avaliação crítica sobre a constituição dessa realidade. É neste ponto que a arte encontra a filosofia. A reflexão sobre a relação entre o mundo factual e a sua apropriação subjetiva, questionando as reivindicações hegemónicas de objetividade e autoridade e problematizando as contradições inerentes à sociedade, são, por imanência, questões filosóficas.
A presente edição de Problematizar a realidade – encontros entre arte e filosofia reúne um conjunto de seis sessões de discussão e quatro seminários, decorre na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e foca-se no momento em que a arte e a filosofia estabelecem diálogos produtivos, propondo abordagens diversificadas sobre o pensamento contemporâneo. Cada sessão de discussão parte da exibição parcial ou integral de obras de arte, acompanhada por uma reflexão conduzida por teóricos, investigadores ou artistas.
A segunda sessão de discussão acontece em novembro e reúne as investigadoras Kerstin Stakemeier e Sarah Lewis-Cappellari numa reflexão suscitada pela exibição de Meeting the Man: James Baldwin in Paris (1970), da autoria de Terence Dixon, um documento desafiante e discursivo em torno de James Baldwin, aclamado intelectual norte-americano radicado em Paris durante a rodagem. O filme parte de encontros tensos entre Baldwin e a equipa de rodagem, que discutem a forma como o documentário deve ser conduzido. Entre fricções e ideias, o resultado é uma obra luminosa sobre o universo de Baldwin e do seu empenhamento intelectual. O filme é apresentado numa cópia recentemente restaurada nunca exibida em Portugal.
Kerstin Stakemeier (Alemanha) é educadora na Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. Em 2017, publicou Entgrenzter Formalismus. Verfahren einer antimodernen Ästhetik (Debordered Formalism. Devices of an Antimodern Aesthetic) na bbooks. Com Anselm Franke, é responsável pela cocuradoria de “Illiberal Lives" (Stiftung Moderne Kunst Ludwig Forum, Aachen, 2023) e "Illiberal Arts" (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlim, 2021). É coautora das publicações Universal Receptivity (2021), com Bill Dietz, e Reproducing Autonomy (2016), com Marina Vishmidt, com quem está a preparar uma nova publicação, bem como da série de exposições e de uma publicação relativas a Class Languages (2017–2018), com M. Ammer, E. Birkenstock, J. Nachtigall e S. Weber.
Sarah Lewis-Cappellari (República Dominicana/EUA) é curadora, dramaturga e professora. Doutorada em Performance Studies pela University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), o seu trabalho aborda a interação entre performance, arte contemporânea, economias visuais coloniais, e culturas negras e caribenhas. Colaborou com Mobile Academy Berlin, coletivo de arte e ciência, como uma das principais curadoras e investigadoras. Sarah Lewis-Cappellari investigou e trabalhou com práticas artísticas colaborativas, enquanto membro do coletivo de performance LEWIS FOREVER, com apresentações no Performance Space 122 (Nova Iorque) e no New Museum (Nova Iorque) e, como membro independente, em colaborações com SOIT(Bruxelas), Agora (Berlim), Sophiensaele (Berlim) e Tanzhaus NRW (Düsseldorf).

Artworks, especially those that comprise documentary material, can offer a particularly challenge to our sense of reality. While the indexical link to what they address grants images and sounds a specific credibility, the artist’s aesthetic, thematic and political choices and self-reflexive stance may generate a critical assessment of the very constitution of reality. At such point, art meets philosophy. To reflect on the relationship between the factual world and its subjective understanding, questioning hegemonic claims to objectivity and problematising the inherent contradictions of society are inherently philosophical issues.
The second edition of Problematising reality – Encounters between art and phi-losophy is a partnership between CAM / Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, IFILNOVA (Cine-Lab) / FCSH / UNL and Maumaus / Lumiar Cité. This is a series of six discussion sessions and four seminars taking place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, focusing on the moment when art and philosophy establish productive dialogues, proposing diverse approaches to con-temporary thought. Each discussion session departs from a partial or full exhibition of works of art in the medium of film, accompanied by a reflection led by theorists, researchers or artists.
The second discussion session takes place in November and brings together the researchers Sarah Lewis-Cappellari and Kerstin Stakemeier, in a reflection prompted by the viewing of Meeting the Man: James Baldwin in Paris (1970), by Terence Dixon. Tense, defiant, discursive: A meeting with James Baldwin doesn’t quite go according to plan for a group of white filmmakers in this rarely seen, Paris-set short film. An illuminating snapshot of Baldwin’s intellectual commitment that bristles with friction and ideas. The film will be presented in a recently restored print.
Sarah Lewis-Cappellari (Dominican Republic/EUA) is a researcher, dramaturg and teacher whose work engages the interface of performance, contemporary art, colonial visual economies and Black and Caribbean Studies. Lewis-Cappellari recently received a PhD in Performance Studies from UCLA. Previously she was based in Berlin, where she worked with the art & science collective Mobile Academy Berlin as one of its primary curators and researchers. Sarah has also researched and worked with collaborative art practices as a member of the performance collective LEWIS FOREVER (which presented work at Performance Space 122 and the New Museum in NYC, among other venues), and independently with SOIT in Brussels, Agora and Sophiensaele in Berlin and Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf.
