De 14 de outubro a 14 de janeiro, o espaço Lumiar Cité apresenta Other Recent Examples, a primeira exposição individual de Alejandro Cesarco (Montevideu, 1975) em Portugal.
O artista uruguaio, que teve o seu trabalho destacado em museus e instituições de renome internacionais e foi responsável, entre outras, pela curadoria de exposições no âmbito da Bienal de São Paulo (2018) e da ARCOmadrid (2020), apresenta em Lisboa várias obras conceptuais em formato de vídeo, texto e fotografia.
Cesarco investiga a fundação do significado abordando assuntos de linguagem a partir de escrita e leitura, tradução, recordação e repetição e das condições do multilinguismo. As estratégias formais de Cesarco (isolar uma nota de rodapé do seu contexto, a compilação contínua de índices para um livro ainda não escrito, um vídeo cuja estrutura narrativa se baseia no segredo, por exemplo) são frequentemente marcadas por um registo emocional, onde o afeto produz uma série de narrativas em diálogo com a história da arte conceptual.
A exposição, bem como a publicação, resultam de uma coprodução entre Maumaus / Lumiar Cité e Artium Museoa - Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del País Vasco.
Alejandro Cesarco (Montevideu, Uruguai, 1975) vive e trabalha em Nova Iorque e Madrid. Cesarco é o diretor de Art Resources Transfer (Nova Iorque), organização sem fins lucrativos focada na distribuição gratuita de livros de arte a comunidades carenciadas dos Estados Unidos da América. A sua obra foi apresentada em museus e outras instituições internacionais, incluindo: MoMA (Nova Iorque, 2023), Kunsthalle Basel (2021), Kunstinstituut Melly (Roterdão, 2019), The Renaissance Society (Chicago, 2017), SculptureCenter (New York, 2017), Midway Contemporary Art (Minneapolis, 2015) e Kunsthalle Zürich (2013).

From 14 October until 14 January 2024, Lumiar Cité will present ‘Other Recent Examples’, Alejandro Cesarco’s first solo exhibition in Portugal.
The work of the Uruguayan artist (Montevideo, 1975) has been shown in renowned international museums and institutions. Cesarco has also curated presentations at the Bienal de São Paulo (2018) and ARCO Madrid (2020), among other contexts. In Lisbon, Alejandro Cesarco will present several conceptual works, using video, text and photography.
Cesarco explores the foundation of meaning by considering issues of language as expressed in writing and reading, translation, remembrance and repetition and the conditions of multilingualism. Cesarco’s formal strategies – such as isolating a footnote from its context, the construction of indexes for books he has not yet written, or the creation of a video whose narrative structure is based on secrecy – are often characterised by an emotional register, where affect produces a series of narratives in dialogue with the history of conceptual art.
The exhibition and publication have been co-produced by Maumaus / Lumiar Cité and Artium Museoa – Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del País Vasco.
Alejandro Cesarco (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1975) lives and works in New York and Madrid. Cesarco is the director of Art Resources Transfer (New York), a non-profit organisation focused primarily on the free distribution of art books to underserved communities across the US. His work has been presented in international institutions, including Museum of Modern Art (New York, 2023), Kunsthalle Basel (2021), Kunstinstituut Melly (Rotterdam, 2019), The Renaissance Society (Chicago, 2017), SculptureCenter (New York, 2017), Midway Contemporary Art (Minneapolis, 2015) and Kunsthalle Zürich (2013).
