Em “Santos, Diabos e Outras Bestas”, o artista, já sem ter nada a provar, escusa-se a evidenciar quaisquer tipo de exibicionismos, reduzindo as formas e as cores ao essencial, muitas vezes monocromáticas. The Gallery Cruzes Canhoto will present a new exhibition of Idalécio. In “Saints, Devils and Other Beasts”, the artist, having nothing to prove, refuses to show any kind of exhibitionism, reducing the shapes and colors to the essential, often monochromatic. Idalécio, jokingly, calls it his Zen phase. [Opening of the exhibition: Saturday, January 18th, 16h00. The artist will be in attendance.] --- [PT] IDALÉCIO - “SANTOS, DIABOS E OUTRAS BESTAS” Idalécio é um artista outsider, auto-didacta, nascido em 1952, numa aldeia do interior do distrito de Aveiro. Órfão de pai, cresceu na casa rural de um tio, onde se fez homem e metalúrgico. Foi aí que, anos mais tarde, começou secretamente a pintar e a esculpir de forma espontânea e intuitiva, sem pretensões artísticas nem interesse em revelar o acervo que foi acumulando ao longo da vida. A produção era tão prolífica, que os compartimentos da casa acabaram completamente preenchidos pelas suas insólitas criações. Quem lá entrasse, deparava-se com um conjunto de galerias surrealistas aparentemente caóticas, mas que eram resultado de um processo entrópico obsessiva e meticulosamente controlado pelo artista. Em Abril de 2016, após vários meses de contactos, é inaugurada a exposição “D’Idalécio… Todos Temos um Pouco” na galeria Cruzes Canhoto, no Porto, mostrando-se pela primeira vez ao público as esculturas e as pinturas deste artista invulgar. Apesar do enorme sucesso da exposição, Idalécio preferiu manter-se no anonimato e continuar na fábrica onde sempre trabalhou, criando apenas nos tempos livres. Só em Setembro de 2017, aquando da sua segunda mostra na Cruzes Canhoto, “Metalúrgico Sexagenário”, ele aceitou revelar-se ao público e à imprensa. Se no início da sua actividade criativa ainda eram evidentes algumas incoerências estilísticas, na produção mais recente é perceptível uma maior coesão de estilos, formas e temas, resultado de um processo evolutivo bem sucedido na direcção de uma linguagem própria absolutamente singular. É o que se pode perceber nesta nova exposição, “Santos, Diabos e Outras Bestas”, onde Idalécio, já sem ter nada a provar, escusa-se a evidenciar quaisquer tipo de exibicionismos, reduzindo as formas e as cores ao essencial, muitas vezes monocromáticas. O artista, a brincar, chama-lhe a sua fase Zen. Nas esculturas, na maioria dos casos, usa apenas como ferramentas um machado, uma serra de lenhador, um martelo e tinta spray. Nas pinturas aqui apresentadas, a preto e branco sobre madeira, utiliza simplesmente uma “trincha de trolha”. É este processo criativo que confere ao corpo da obra o mesmo aspecto bruto, primitivo e minimal que caracteriza cada uma das figuras ali representadas, sejam elas santos, diabos ou outras bestas. - [ENG] IDALÉCIO - “SAINTS, DEVILS AND OTHER BEASTS” Idalécio is a Portuguese self-taught artist, born in 1952, in a small village in the interior of Aveiro district. Fatherless, he grew up in an uncle's rural house, where he became a man and a metallurgist. It was there that, years later, he secretly began to paint and sculpt in a spontaneous and intuitive way, without artistic pretensions or interest in revealing the collection that he was accumulating throughout his life. His production was so prolific that all the rooms of the house were completely filled with his unusual creations. Whoever got in there, would find a series of seemingly chaotic surrealist galleries that were the result of an entropic process obsessively and meticulously controlled by the artist. In April 2016, after several months of conversations, the exhibition “D’Idalécio… Todos Temos um Pouco” (From Idalécio… Everyone Has a Little Bit) opens at the Cruzes Canhoto Gallery in Porto, showing for the first time the paintings and sculptures by this outsider artist. Despite the huge success of the exhibition, Idalécio intended to remain anonymous and continued in the factory where he has always worked, creating only in his free time. It was not until September 2017, during his second show at Cruzes Canhoto, “Metalúrgico Sexagenário” (Sexagenarian Metallurgist), that he agreed to reveal himself to the public and the press. If at the beginning of his creative activity some stylistic inconsistencies were evident, in the more recent production it is perceptible a greater cohesion of styles, forms and themes, the result of a successful evolutionary process towards a unique and personal style. This is what you can see in the new exhibition, “Santos, Diabos e Outras Bestas” (Saints, Devils and Other Beasts), where Idalécio, having nothing to prove, refuses any kind of exhibitionism, reducing the shapes and colors to the essential, often monochromatic. Jokingly, the artist calls it his Zen phase. In sculptures, in most cases, he only uses an ax, a lumberjack saw, a hammer and spray paint as tools. In the paintings presented here, in black and white on wood, he simply uses a worker brush. It is this creative process that gives the work the same raw, primitive and minimal aspect that characterizes each of the figures represented there, whether they are saints, devils or other beasts.
