| MORE on the SERIES
Hugo Cantegrel's work is strongly influenced by the Nouveau Roman. As in “Les Choses” by Georges Perec, everyday life objects become the main characters of multiple narrations. He likes to keep his work unshut. It is to say that he is looking for different layers of understanding, a certain idea of universality, a mass of references, a call for memories, an interweaving of narratives that each viewer is able to create.

[Press Release]

The Switch presents “We’ve been diving, all day long, all day long.” by Artist Hugo Cantegrel. From October 12th until October 29th 2017, Hugo Cantegrel will reveal his site-specific installation conceived for the Cabinet de L’Art – the gallery’s front room.

Hugo Cantegrel is a french artist. He studied in Paris and London. After graduating from Central Saint Martins school in 2015, he moved to Lisbon where he now lives and works. Hugo Cantegrel’s practice is built from an autobiographical narrative. He works with installation which main concern to him is about composition. He is looking for a certain visual musicality, a poetry, a theatricality in the installation.

In that matter, some of the works act as the main characters; while others have a subordinate role. On one hand some bring a dynamic for the eye of the viewer, on the other some act as silences.

Hugo Cantegrel’s work is strongly influenced by the Nouveau Roman. As in “Les Choses” by Georges Perec, objects from our everyday life become protagonists of multiple narrations.

Hugo likes to keep his work unshut. It is to say that he is searching for various layers of understanding, a certain idea of universality, a mass of references, a call for memories, an interweaving of tales that each viewer is able to create.

The works’ aesthetic is based on the interior of houses. When inside someone’s flat, Hugo likes to see decorative arrangements as landscapes of objects. Everyday life’s objects have now entered museums, and we as people, have changed our way to observe such things - not as products, but as pieces of art.

“Look at objects in a house as an installation in a gallery and the world reveals its poetry, its musicality, its theatricality.”- Hugo Cantegrel

“We’ve been diving, all day long, all day long.” opens on Thursday 12th of October 2017, from 7pm to 11pm, and will be on view until October 29th at The Switch.

By appointment only. Contact info@theswitchgallery.com
