Temos o prazer de apresentar "Orchidacea Herbarium", uma exposição pop-up da artista sul-africana Tessa Teixeira, que apresenta uma nova série de obras desenvolvidas ao longo de um período alargado e concluídas durante uma residência de um mês na Zaratan. Através da sua prática artística, ela explora as intersecções da filosofia existencial, alterações climáticas, ecologia e biodiversidade, utilizando uma variedade de média - como pintura, gravura e instalações - muitas vezes misturados. 
A biodiversidade global enfrenta um dos períodos de extinção mais intensos da história da vida, conhecido como o sexto grande evento de extinção. De acordo com o Professor Alexandre Antonelli, Diretor de Ciência dos Jardins Botânicos de Kew, e outros cientistas, 45% das espécies de plantas com flor estão em risco de extinção. 
O interesse de Tessa pela perda de biodiversidade em Portugal foi inicialmente motivado por um artigo que leu, da Associação Portuguesa de Ciência da Vegetação, que indicava que na "Lista Vermelha das plantas vasculares", das 110 espécies de plantas que podem ser encontradas em Portugal continental, 53 estão ameaçadas de extinção. 
Em resposta, Tessa realizou mais pesquisas e focou-se nas orquídeas, porque são indicadores da saúde do ecossistema, e a sua presença significa que o ecossistema é vibrante e cheio de vida. A dependência das orquídeas de micorrizas para a germinação e de polinizadores (principalmente insetos) para a sua propagação são casos clássicos de interação com outras biotas na natureza. 
Portugal é um dos últimos países onde vários tipos de orquídeas europeias podem crescer em condições naturais. Tornou-se crucial preservar os poucos lugares que ainda não foram destruídos pelo homem. 
BIO: A prática artística e o trabalho de TESSA TEIXEIRA concentram-se na Filosofia Existencial, Ecologia e narrativas Climáticas, utilizando pintura, técnicas mistas, instalação e gravura. Concluiu a Licenciatura em Ensino Primário, com especialização em Arte, em 1991, pela Universidade de Witwatersrand, África do Sul. Esteve extensivamente envolvida em projetos de ONGs que abordavam o acesso à habitação em comunidades de baixa renda, desenvolvimento rural e necessidades económicas na África do Sul. Em 2006, começou a dedicar-se ativamente à sua prática artística e embarcou em vários programas curtos de desenvolvimento artístico em São Francisco (2010) e Londres (2011). O seu trabalho encontra-se em coleções privadas e públicas, e expôs a nível nacional e internacional. O seu trabalho foi apresentado em várias publicações online e impressas, conforme listado no seu website, e recentemente foi oradora convidada em 'Narratives of CARE', transmitido ao vivo e publicado na revista online Insights of an Eco Artist.

We are delighted to present "Orchidacea Herbarium" a pop-up exhibition by South African artist Tessa Teixeira, featuring a new series of works developed over an extended period and completed during a month-long residency at Zaratan. 
Through her practice, she explores the intersections of existential philosophy, climate change, ecology, and biodiversity using a variety of media - such as paintings, printmaking, and installations - often mixed together. 
Global biodiversity is facing one of the most intense extinction period in the history of life, called the sixth great extinction event. According to Professor Alexandre Antonelli, Director of Science at Kew Botanical gardens, and scientists, 45% of flowering plant species are at a risk of extinction. 
Her interest in Portugal’s loss of biodiversity was initially motivated by an article she read, that indicated that the Portuguese Association of Science of Vegetation, that stated that in the ‘Red list of vascular plants’ that of the 110 species of plants that can be found on mainland Portugal, 53 are facing extinction’ 
Tessa in response, undertook further secondary research and focused on Orchids, because they are the indicators of the health of the ecosystem, and their presence signifies that the ecosystem is vibrant and lively. The dependence of orchids on mycorrhiza for germination and pollinators (mainly insects) for their propagation are classic cases of interaction with other biotas in nature. 
Portugal is one of the last countries where several types of European orchids can grow in natural conditions. It has become crucial to preserve the few places that haven’t been destroyed by man.  
 
 
BIO: TESSA TEIXEIRA’s artistic practice and work focus on Existential Philosophy, Ecology and Climate narratives, using painting, mixed media, installation, and printmaking. She completed a Bachelor’s in Primary Education, majoring in Art, in 1991 through the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She was extensively involved in NGO projects addressing access for housing in lower-income communities, rural development and economic needs in South Africa. In 2006 she started actively focusing on her Art practice and embarked on various short Art development programs in San Francisco (2010) and London (2011). Her work is in private and public collections, and she exhibited nationally and internationally.
