Woven Raquel Belli exposição individual underdogs capsule 24/01 – 07/03/2020 A Underdogs Capsule tem o prazer de apresentar “Woven”, uma pequena exposição individual da fotógrafa e artista portuguesa Raquel Belli. O conjunto de imagens que integram esta mostra são uma continuação do trabalho iniciado pela artista em Timor Leste. Com padrões e técnicas de tecelagem e cestaria recolhidas nas várias regiões do país, as imagens, com relações directas ou indirectas entre si, são entrelaçadas, respeitando padrões típicos largamente utilizados naquela zona do mundo. O carácter repetitivo contrasta com a aparente desorganização das formas, imprimindo-lhes um cunho estético visualmente apelativo, de equilíbrio, quase prazer. Pretende ainda homenagear uma arte artesanal secular trivializada e praticada maioritariamente por mulheres. – Sobre a artista: Raquel Belli (n. 1982) é mãe, fotógrafa e artista visual. Portuguesa de raízes italianas, tem residido e trabalhado nos últimos oito anos entre Portugal e Timor Leste. Formada em Artes Plásticas pela ESAD – Escola Superior de Artes e Design (Caldas da Rainha, 2006), concluiu o Curso Técnico de Fotografia na ETIC – Escola de Tecnologias, Inovação e Criação (Lisboa, 2008) onde desenvolveu e aprofundou a fotografia de cena. Colaborou e participou em várias exposições colectivas e individuais no decorrer dos seus estudos. Após estagiar e trabalhar durante alguns anos com a revista Volta ao Mundo, a fotografia documental e de viagens ganhou importância no seu percurso. Em Timor colaborou na criação da WAP (WomenArtPower), estrutura para a capacitação feminina através do apoio à criação e divulgação de arte feita por mulheres. Publicou um livro de fotografias sobre o peculiar Natal em Timor, em colaboração com José Ramos-Horta e Xanana Gusmão (“Aqui Onde O Sol, Logo Em Nascendo, Vê Primeiro”, 2014). Para além do seu trabalho documental na imprensa, a plasticidade de que tira partido nas suas imagens têm levado o seu trabalho a ser exposto em galerias e espaço culturais. The set of images that make up this showcase are a continuation of the work begun by the artist in East Timor. With patterns and techniques of basketry and weaving gathered from the country's various regions, the images, with direct or indirect relations between themselves, are interwoven, following typical patterns widely used in that corner of the world. The repetitive character contrasts with the apparent disorganisation of the forms, imprinting them with a visually appealing aesthetic touch, of balance, almost pleasure. It also intends to pay tribute to a centuries-old handcrafted art trivialised and practiced mostly by women. – About the artist: Raquel Belli (b, 1982) is a mother, photographer, and visual artist. Being Portuguese of Italian descent, she has lived and worked in the last eight years between Portugal and East Timor. With a degree in Visual Arts from ESAD – Escola Superior de Artes e Design (Caldas da Rainha, 2006), she finished the Technical Course in Photography at ETIC – Escola de Tecnologias, Inovação e Criação (Lisbon, 2008) where she developed and deepened still photography. She collaborated and participated in various group and solo exhibitions in the course of her studies. After doing an internship and working for a few years in the travel magazine Volta ao Mundo, documentary and travel photography gained importance in her career. In Timor she collaborated in the creation of WAP (WomenArtPower) a structure for female empowerment through the support to creation and promotion of art made by women. She published a photography book on the peculiar Christmas in Timor in collaboration with José Ramos-Horta and Xanana Gusmão (“Aqui Onde O Sol, Logo Em Nascendo, Vê Primeiro”, 2014). Besides her documentary work in the press, the plasticity which she makes use of in her images has led her work to be showcased in galleries and cultural venues.
