Para a exposição A Journey a dupla de artistas apodera-se do espaço principal da Galeria Underdogs, transformando-o num percurso que nos remete para as diferentes etapas de uma viagem. Através de um mapeamento demarcado em vinil no chão, indica uma trajectória que ilustra as fases por que passamos para chegar à concretização de uma ideia, de um sonho ou de uma transformação, abarcando tanto uma dimensão pessoal como universal. - Mariana Branco (n. 1986) e Emanuel Barreira (n. 1986) são os artistas que compõem o Halfstudio, um colectivo português que desenvolve projectos em várias áreas criativas tendo sempre o lettering e o sign painting como elemento central. A sua linguagem visual é caracterizada pela utilização de letras volumétricas e layouts dinâmicos com mensagens impactantes e cores vibrantes. Nos seus murais e intervenções de arte urbana a mensagem é sempre inspirada pela comunidade onde a obra se insere. O duo tem apresentado o seu trabalho em exposições e festivais de arte urbana tanto em Portugal como internacionalmente.

Em “I can do that too!” says the AI, o artista suiço Tobias Gutmann dá a conhecer ao público o Sai Bot: um robot de inteligência artificial que produz retratos em tempo real, tendo como base os milhares de desenhos que o artista tem criado desde 2012 no âmbito do seu projecto Face-o-mat. A partir destes dados, o Sai Bot assimila e aprende a linguagem formal e o repertório dos retratos, passando então a criar as suas próprias combinações. - Tobias Gutmann nasceu em Wewak, Papua-Nova Guiné, em 1987 e vive em Zurique, Suíça. O núcleo da sua prática artística reside na criação e investigação de encontros – entre pessoas, culturas e ambientes, mas também entre o que percepcionamos no exterior e o que sentimos no interior. Procurando sempre entrar num estado de fluxo, o acto de desenhar transforma-se num ritual em que manifesta e captura os seus encontros através das mãos. Os seus desenhos contêm sempre um elemento de brincadeira e curiosidade, de bravio e tranquilidade. Com a sua performance de retrato Face-o-mat, Tobias Gutmann encontrou mais de 5000 pessoas por todo o mundo para desenhar interpretações abstractas daquilo que vê nas suas caras. Em vez de proporcionar uma representação fotorrealista, captura o som de uma pessoa. O arquivo dos seus desenhos desenvolveu uma linguagem e significados próprios, dissolvendo-se em múltiplas narrativas através de várias técnicas. Em 2019 iniciou uma colaboração com a Dazlus para desenvolver o Sai Bot, personagem de inteligência artificial que continua o legado de Face-o-mat. Assumindo o papel de gémeo artista, o Sai Bot posiciona-se como uma máquina humanizada que cria imagens subjectivas das pessoas que participam na sua performance. Através de Face-o mat e do Sai Bot, Tobias Gutmann explora agora um novo tipo de encontro: entre homem e máquina.

In the A Journey exhibition this duo of artists takes over the main space of Underdogs Gallery, transforming it into a path that reflects the different stages of a journey. Through a map outlined in vinyl on the floor, they indicate a trajectory that illustrates the phases we go through in order to reach the actualization of an idea, a dream or a transformation, taking on both a personal and universal dimension. - Mariana Branco (b. 1986) and Emanuel Barreira (b. 1986) are the artists behind Halfstudio, a collective based in Portugal which develops projects in various creative fields always with lettering and sign painting as the central element. Their visual language is characterized by the use of three dimensional letters and dynamic layouts with striking messages and vibrant colors. In their murals and urban art interventions the message is always inspired by the community where the work takes place. The duo have been showcasing their work in exhibitions and urban art festivals both in Portugal and internationally.

In “I can do that too!” Says the AI, Swiss artist Tobias Gutmann presents the public with Sai Bot: an artificial intelligence robot who produces portraits in real time, using the thousands of drawings the artist has created since 2012 in the scope of his Face-o-mat performance as a source. From this data, Sai Bot assimilates and learns the formal language and repertoire of the portraits, thus creating their own combinations. - Tobias Gutmann was born in Wewak, Papua New Guinea, in 1987 and lives in Zurich, Switzerland. At the heart of his artistic practice lies the creation and investigation of encounters – between people, cultures, and environments, but also between what we perceive on the outside and what we feel on the inside. Constantly aiming to enter into a flow state of creation, the act of drawing becomes a ritual in which he manifests and captures his encounters through his hands. His drawings always entail playfulness and curiosity, wilderness and tranquility. With his portrait performance Face-o-mat, Tobias Gutmann has met over 5000 people worldwide to draw abstract interpretations of what he sees in their faces. Rather than providing a photorealistic depiction, he captures the sound of a person. The ever-growing archive of his drawings has developed its own language and meaning, dissolving into multiple narratives in various mediums. In 2019 he initiated a collaboration with Dazlus to develop Sai Bot, an AI character who continues the legacy of Face-o-mat. Standing as his digital artist twin, they draw portraits that transmit the Face-o-mat DNA and process. With these highly abstract portraits, Sai Bot positions themselves as a humanized machine that creates subjective images of the people who participate in their performance. Through Face-o-mat and Sai Bot, Tobias Gutmann now explores a new kind of creative encounter: the one between man and machine.
