Join us for the 1-day incredibly enjoyable trip to the university city of Coimbra, where you will experience the madness and happiness of students celebrating the beginning of their student life!
BRIEF HISTORY:
This popular party has its origin in 19th century, and is known as one of the biggest welcome parties for those students who are going to enter for the first time the university, the novices, called “caloiros” here in Portugal.
Regarding the tradition, these novice students have to carry in their bodies all types of random metal objects, cans (“latas”) or satiric messages written in paper given by their “padrinhos”, the veteran students, who are a figure similar to a godfather for them. With these metal objects tied to the body they have to walk through the streets of Coimbra, making noise with them, and overtaking some obstacles that the veteran students put for them. Apart of the metal objects the novices usually have to wear customs, which are agreed by the “padrinhos” as well, depending of the degree they are going to take in the university. At the end of this kind of race, the novice students become real students after being baptised by their respective “padrinhos”. That is a way to put the new students near the older ones.
Nowadays this party is still taking place in Coimbra and it receives every year thousands of students and visitors.
PROGRAM (may change):
09:30 – Meeting point, to be announced
10:00 – Departure to Coimbra
12:00 – Arrival in Coimbra: free time to explore the city and enjoy the student parade
19:30 – Meeting point for departure to Lisbon
20:00 – Departure to Lisbon
22:00 – Arrival in Lisbon
PRICES:
15€ - first 25 tickets (price for TIAB Erasmus Card holders)
20€ - after 25 tickets (price for TIAB Erasmus Card holders)
The price includes: transportation by chartered bus and insurance.
