LIGHTSEY nasceu em Detroit em 15 de Fevereiro , 1937. Com o apoio da família , começou os estudos com Johnston Flanagan .Teve depois Glady's Wade Dillard,,professora entre outros de Barry Harris , Alice McCloud e Tommy Flanagan.
Na Cass Technical High School ,Hugh Lawson e Paul Chambers apresentaram Kirk ao jazz. e juntos tocaram na orquestra que incluía Ron Carter e Kiane Zawadi. Em 1954 Lightsey ganhou uma bolsa de estudo para clarineta na Universidade Wayne mas aos 18 anos optou por tornar-se profissional.
Nesta altura Kightsey também trabalhou com Yusef Lateef, Melba Liston e Ernestine Anderson.
Depois de cumprida a recruta ( 1960 )regressou a Detroit e formou um dueto com Cecil McBee. Nessa época Kirk também tocou para a Motown e arranjou tempo para estudar com o pianista clássico Boris Maximovich , sendo , no entanto primordialmente influenciado pelos mestres Hank Jones e Tommy Flannagan.
Ao longo da sua extensa carreira tem tocado com os mais importantes nomes do Jazzinternacional ,incluindo Yusef Lateef, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Harold Land, KennyBurrell, Chet Baker, James Moody, Clifford Jordan, Benny Golson e Don Cherry.
Kirk Lightsey define-se como " pianista de Detroit incorporando a "...iluminação de Bud Powell , o estilo de Art Tatum ,e um sentimento bebop ."

Kirk Lightsey, from Detroit, Michigan, where he was born on February15, 1937, is a pianist of immense accomplishment and versatility who worked with scores of major jazz stars, including Yusef Lateef, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Harold Land, Kenny Burrell, Chet Baker, James Moody, Clifford Jordan, Benny Golson and Don Cherry.

Lightsey had piano instruction from age five and studied piano and clarinet through high school. After service in the Army, Lightsey worked in Detroit and California in the 1960s as an accompanist to singers. He also worked with jazz musicians such as Yusef Lateef, Betty Carter, Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Stitt, Chet Baker, and Kenny Burrell. From 1979 to 1983 he toured with Dexter Gordon and was a member of The Leaders in the late 1980s. During the 1980s he led several sessions of his own, including duets with pianist Harold Danko. In the 1980s and since he has worked with Jimmy Raney, Clifford Jordan, Woody Shaw, David Murray, and Harold Land.
