O Pennsylvania State University Men's Glee Club (E.U.A.) irá abrir a XXIII Semana Coral de Lagoa (Algarve, Portugal), no domingo, dia 14 de Maio de 2023, no Auditório Carlos do Carmo, na cidade de Lagoa (Algarve).
A Ideias do Levante (http://www.ideiasdolevante.info/, Lagoa, Algarve) e o Município de Lagoa (http://www.cm-lagoa.pt/, Algarve) organizam, de 14 a 20 de Maio de 2023, a vigésima terceira edição da Semana Coral de Lagoa, contando com a participação das seguintes formações: The Pennsylvania State University Men's Glee Club (E.U.A.), Grupo Coral Ossónoba (Faro), Coral Almira (Alcácer do Sal) e o Coral Ideias do Levante (Lagoa, Algarve).

O Pennsylvania State University Men’s Glee Club foi fundado em 1888 e é um dos mais antigos e conceituados coros de faculdade dos E.U.A. Fora da Pensilvânia tem-se apresentado em catedrais e salas de concerto de renome em diversas grandes cidades, como em Washington D.C., Nova Iorque, Pittsburgh, S. Francisco e Boston, bem como no estrangeiro, em países que incluem Islândia, Nova Zelândia, Trindade e Tobago e País de Gales. O Glee Club teve até a oportunidade de atuar na Catedral de Notre-Dame de Paris, antes do incêndio. Integram o Penn State Glee Club estudantes pré- e pós-graduados de várias disciplinas académicas, todos unidos pelo prazer de interpretar um repertório muito diverso que vai do Século XV1 ao actual. Sob a direção do Maestro Christopher Kiver, oferecem ao público música sacra e secular, bem como espirituais, peças tradicionais, madrigais, glees e canções populares. Neste concerto, o Penn State Glee Club será acompanhado ao piano por Rachel Flicker, jovem que obteve muitos prémios e é já reconhecida na Pennsylvania pelo seu trabalho como pianista. Conta ainda com a participação da prestigiada soprano Jennifer Trost, ilustre cantora de ópera e recitalista com carreira nacional e internacional. Na sua carreira deslumbrante, passada maioritariamente em Europa, interpretou papéis principais no Wuppertal Opera e no Bavarian State Opera e teve o privilégio de trabalhar com grandes maestros como Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch, James Levine e Zubin Mehta. Tem igualmente trabalhado intensamente como recitalista.
Maestro Christopher Kiver
Christopher Kiver é professor de Música e diretor de Atividades Corais na Universidade do Estado de Pennsylvania, onde dirige o Coro de Concertos e o Glee Club, assim como ensina e dirige o programa de Direção Coral e de Literatura Coral. É presidente da Região do Leste da Associação de Diretores Corais Americanos. Também tem trabalhado como maestro convidado, especialista e como júri em concursos nos E.U.A., Austrália, China e Nova Zelândia. É licenciado pela Universidade de Londres, pela Universidade do Estado da Flórida e pela Universidade de Michigan. Recebeu vários prémios e bolsas de estudo incluindo o Prémio Fulbright, entre outros.

A Semana Coral de Lagoa é, segundo José Carlos Bago d'Uva (mentor do projeto inicial), um encontro aberto à partilha de vivências musicais e de inesquecíveis momentos de convívio, é a ocasião anual em que o Concelho de Lagoa faz soar "a 4 vozes" o (en)/canto da polifonia vocal, por terras "do Levante". Para José Carlos, esta data representa já um marco no circuito de eventos corais do nosso país, do qual se orgulha ter contribuído para a sua génese. Muitos foram os que já deixaram "depositadas" as suas vozes na mítica cisterna do Convento de S. José (nas primeiras edições...) e também os que contribuem para enaltecer o auditório da cidade, dando a escutar as suas emoções através do repertório coral que trabalham com dedicação e entusiasmo. The Pennsylvania State University Men's Glee Club (USA) us set to perform at the opening concert of the 23rd LAGOA CHOIR WEEK on May 14th 2003, at 5p.m., at Carlos do Carmo Auditorium, in the city of Lagoa (Algarve, Portugal).
The Cultural Association of Lagoa, Ideias do Levante (Algarve), in partnership with the municipality of Lagoa (Algarve), will organize the 23rd edition of Semana Coral de Lagoa (Lagoa Choir Week, http://www.semanacoral.net/), a non-competitive choir festival that will take place within the Council of Lagoa from the 14th up until the 20th of May. The 2023 edition will feature the following talented groups: The Pennsylvania State University Men's Glee Club (USA), Grupo Coral Ossónoba (Faro), Coral Almira (Alcácer do Sal) and Coral Ideias do Levante (Lagoa, Algarve).

The Pennsylvania State University Men’s Glee Club is one of the most active and distinguished men’s collegiate choruses in the United States. Founded in December of 1888, the Glee Club has entertained audiences at Penn State, around the US, and the world with the joy of song from classical to contemporary. Since its first spring in March of 1889, the Glee Club has toured throughout the US and abroad with recent tours to New Zealand, San Francisco, Boston, and Iceland. In recent years, the Glee Club has sung at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, and Notre-Dame in Paris. The Glee Club takes an active part in singing at Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Association, American Choral Directors Association, and Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses conferences.
The Glee Club is Penn State’s oldest student organization and is composed of 60-70 singers from all majors of the University. Every fall, the Glee Club holds an annual Fall Concert and every spring holds the Blue & White Weekend Concert held in Penn State’s Eisenhower Auditorium. In addition to formal concerts, the Glee Club and the Hi-Lo’s sing at various events for the Universit and the surrounding State College community. Each spring, the Glee Club goes on Spring Tour. The Glee Club has toured sites such as New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. The Glee Club occasionally travels abroad to places like New Zealand and most recently, Iceland.
The Glee Club sings music for men’s voices from the 16th to the 21st centuries including sacred and secular works, folk songs from around the world, spirituals, and traditional Penn State songs. The Penn State Hi-Lo’s, a subset of the Glee Club founded in 1933 perform madrigals, glees, and recent popular songs. Throughout its history, the Glee Club has made many recordings and television appearances and in 1994, they released their first CD recording, P.S. – Happy Holidays. Director: Dr. Christopher Kiver
Christopher Kiver is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Pennsylvania State University where he directs the Concert Choir and Glee Club, oversees the graduate choral conducting program and teaches classes in choral conducting and choral literature. He is Director of Music at the University Baptist and Brethren Church in State College and has served as founder and director of The Orpheus Singers and guest conductor of the Pennsylvania Center Orchestra. Kiver is a graduate of the University of London, Florida State University and the University of Michigan where he received the D.M.A. in choral conducting.
Choirs under Kiver’s direction have performed at numerous state and regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and National Association for Music Education. In March 2017, Kiver led a performance of Julia Wolfe’s Anthracite Fields with the Penn State University Concert Choir and Bang on a Can All-Stars. He has taught at the Westminster Choir College Summer and Saturday Seminar programs, and appeared as guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator in the United States, Australia, China and New Zealand. Kiver is a former national Repertoire and Standards chair for Men’s/TTBB Choirs for the American Choral Directors Association, and a past-president of the Pennsylvania chapter of ACDA.
A native of England, he has received numerous prizes and scholarships including a Fulbright Award, and the 2002 Sydney World Choral Symposium Foundation Scholarship. In February 2006, he was a double Grammy Award winner (“Best Choral Performance” and “Best Classical Album”) as a chorus master for the critically acclaimed Naxos recording of William Bolcom’s monumental Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Kiver was the recipient of Penn State University’s President’s Award for Engagement with Students in 2017.

Each year, for one week, singing sweeps through Lagoa, and voices from all places unite in a harmonious feast of melodies and emotions. The Choir Week of Lagoa is already a reference in the panorama of Algarvian choir festivals. It began as the tiny cry of a strong and determined child, then grew with school songs learnt and sung, and now has become a searcher of new sounds and experiences in polyphonic choir singing. Each year it yearns to go farther, to innovate, to dare to fly even higher. Each year, the Choir Week of Lagoa is bigger and more mature. And with it, the singers who participate have also grown at the musical level.
Many friendships have been firmed. Many musical ties have been formed. Many songs have been found. According to Roberto Estorninho (executive producer), this is the secret of music, the same musical beat that regulates all hearts, "and this is why we love music - it unites us, and it makes our hearts beat in one single rhythm."
The Choir Week of Lagoa is, according to its first mentor, José Carlos Bago d’Uva, a conference open to the sharing of musical experiences and of unforgettable moments; it is the time of the year when Lagoa sings “in four voices” the (en)chantment of vocal polyphony across the lands of the Levante.

The people that have reserved for the concert in the Auditório Carlos do Carmo have to pick up their free tickets at the box office from the Auditório around 30 minutes before the show starts.
