Like a Dog Ricardo Romero PT Like a Dog é uma resposta à Open Call feita no âmbito do Artes à Rua, resultando numa exposição com trabalhos desenvolvidos pelo artista durante o último ano. A sua prática artística recorre a diversos meios como pintura, escultura, vídeo ou instalação, para investigar a nossa resposta a estereótipos sociais e políticos sedimentados na nossa compreensão do mundo na contemporaneidade.
Esta exposição “Like a Dog” (2021) é composta por pintura, um néon e uma escultura de grandes dimensões. O néon, convoca uma frase dita recorrentemente pelo ex-presidente dos Estados Unidos durante os seus discursos públicos para relacionar o homem e o animal. O histórico desta frase e a típica hipocrisia que advém dos discursos do ex-presidente, são ironicamente sublinhados, pela presença de uma escultura, onde figura um cão em posição de retração a um perigo ou ameaça, sobrepondo-se a uma postura mais agressiva que está pintada. Apesar de não termos acesso ao perigo, é fácil imaginar as atrocidades políticas, sociais e históricas a que este cão reage perante esta presença da frase iluminada. O caracter político que convoca, propõem-nos uma série de questões e metáforas para a era de transmutação e bipolaridade política e social em que vivemos. No conjunto, as obras apresentadas partem de pressupostos distintos que se encontram num referente que o artista tem explorado ao longo dos últimos anos – o cão. Não é por acaso que este animal é frequentemente equiparado ao homem – desde a sua anatomia ao seu carácter – servem agora de exemplo as relações metafóricas e poéticas que Ricardo Romero apresenta que nos fazem questionar temas e noções que estão na génese motivadora da sua obra.

Like a Dog is a response to an Open Call made within the scope of Artes à Rua, resulting in an exhibition with works developed by the artist during the last year. His artistic practice uses various media such as painting, sculpture, video or installation, to investigate our response to social and political stereotypes based on our understanding of the today’s world.
This Exhibition “Like a Dog” (2021) is composed by painting, a neon and a large sculpture. Neon, summons a sentence frequently said by the current Past President of the United States during his public speeches to relate man and animal. The history of this sentence and the typical hypocrisy that comes from the Past President’s speeches, are ironically underlined, by the presence of a sculpture, which depicts a dog in a position of withdrawal from a danger or threat, overlapping with a more aggressive posture that is painted. Although we do not have access to danger, it is easy to imagine the political, social and historical atrocities to which this dog reacts to the presence of the illuminated sentence. The political character it calls for, proposes a series of questions and metaphors for the era of political transmutation and bipolarity in which we live. As a whole, the works presented start from different assumptions that are found in a reference that the artist has explored over the last few years – the dog. It is not by chance that this animal is often equated with man – from its anatomy to its character – now serve as an example of the metaphorical and poetic relations that Ricardo Romero presents that make us question themes and notions that are in the genesis that motivated his work.
