"SEM RECEIO DE CRIAR O CAOS" foca numa das personalidades mais controversas do cinema independente norte-americano, Harmony Korine - skater, artista, argumentista, e acima de tudo realizador – que redefiniu e baralhou questões de género e sexualidade, e levou o conceito de queer a novos limites. Assinou a sua rampa de lançamento com o argumento de Kids (1995), dirigido por Larry Clark. Estreou-se na realização com Gummo (1997), indiscutivelmente trashy, seguindo-se novos sucessos, nomeadamente com o realismo mais ficcional de Mister Lonely (2007), que foge um pouco ao panorama geral da sua filmografia - e que será exibido no contexto desta exposição. Mais recentemente, alinhou-se numa estética muito pop e bastante próxima de alguns videojogos, com Spring Breakers (2012) e The Beach Bum (2019). Como disse o próprio Korine numa entrevista durante a sua retrospetiva no Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2017), “Sem receio de criar o caos”, onde a conjugação da obra plástica de Andy James, Dylan Silva, Karine Rougier, Filippo Fiumani e Rui Palma, pretende representar e elogiar alguns aspetos da sua obra cinematográfica. O pop, o kitsch, o trash, o falso realismo, o imaginário, o delírio e a poesia, todos cabem no universo de Korine que se apresenta como o reverso da moeda do sonho americano, no qual o quadro estético se constrói em torno de uma sociedade marginalizada, teoricamente livre e decadente. A representação, por vezes mágica ou surreal, e quase sempre poética de uma juventude tão paradoxalmente complexa e frívola, consumista e sonhadora. O retrato cru desta mascarada hedónica, profunda, efémera, mas eternamente suspensa que tanto nos aplicamos em formular, abater e edificar novamente. ______________________________________________________ "FEARLESS OF CREATING CAOS" focusses on one of the most controversial personalities in American independent film, Harmony Korine – skater, artist, screenwriter, and above all filmmaker – who helped redefine and question gender and sexuality related issues and took the concept of queer to a whole new level. He gained notoriety by writing the script for Larry Clark’s Kids (1995), and made his directorial debut with the unmistakably trashy Gummo (1997), followed by enormous successes, such as the more fictionalized realism of Mister Lonely (2007), a unique piece in his filmography – which will be screened in the context of this exhibition. More recently, Korine embraced a clearly pop aesthetic reminiscent of some videogames, in films such as Spring Breakers (2012) and The Beach Bum (2019). As Korine himself stated in an interview on the retrospective of his work at the Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2017), “Fearless of creating chaos” – this is the motto which gathers the work of artists Andy James, Dylan Silva, Karine Rougier, Filippo Fiumani, and Rui Palma, intended to represent and acknowledge some aspects of Korine’s films. Pop, kitsch, trash, fake realism, the imaginary, the delirious and the poetic, all converge in Korine’s universe, which introduces itself as the reverse of the American dream, and where the aesthetic tableaux is built upon a theoretically free, decaying, marginalized society. The often magical and surreal – and almost always poetic – representation of such a complex and frivolous, consumerist and day-dreaming youth. The raw depiction of this hedonistic, deep, and ephemeral - although forever adjourned - mascarade, that we are always so keen on formulating, destroying, and again rebuilding.
