NOMADX, Beta-i, Le Wagon and Ruby on Rails Lisbon are excited to announce a special session with Ruby on Rails guru and all-around renaissance man Obie Fernandez where he will tell his story and open the floor to Q&A from the Lisbon tech community.
Although he's quickly gaining fame as a globe-trotting progressive house and trance DJ on the worldwide festival circuit, somewhat amazingly, Obie Fernandez is also considered by many techies to be the Godfather of Ruby on Rails. He's a 25-year veteran of professional software development, noted author and conference speaker. He's also the series editor of The Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series, and author of The Rails Way, considered by many to be the Bible of Ruby on Rails.
Obie is currently Managing Director of Kickass Partners and CTO of Lisbon-based NOMADX. His prior roles include high-profile startup gigs such as CTO of Andela, a Zuckerberg-backed startup that is training one-hundred thousand young African men and women to be world-class software developers. He's also been a founder of YCombinator and TechStars startups and held leadership roles at prestigious consultancies such as ThoughtWorks and his own world-famous web agency, Hashrocket. Early in Obie's career, he worked on some of the world's first Java enterprise projects and founded Atlanta's Extreme Programming User Group (later Agile Atlanta). At ThoughtWorks and his own agency Hashrocket, he led high-risk projects for massive companies like Daimler, John Deere, and Sony Ericsson, delivering some of the world's first successful enterprise Ruby on Rails systems.
Somehow Obie manages to juggle his entrepreneurship and tech ventures with being a father, avid writing, regular attendance at Burning Man events, and piloting a rocketing new career as an electronic music producer/DJ. His original music is signed to prestigious labels such as Perfecto and Armada Music, with support from the biggest DJs in the world, amongst them Paul Oakenfold and Armin Van Buuren. In September he'll be one of the featured artists at Armin's A State of Trance 900 Festival in Mexico City, playing to tens of thousands of trance fans.
