Duma started drawing with crayons and colour pencils from as far back as he can remember. In 1994 he met the late Trevor Makhoba (1956-2003) who was well known for his controversial and socially critical painting style. Makhoba mentored Duma from 1994-2003 and much of his influence can be seen in Duma’s earlier work.
Duma ‘stores’ his own life experiences, opinions, and nostalogic (nostalgia, logic) stories of childhood in his paintings. He is the author and narrator of his works. The figures in his paintings reference illustration and the tradition of storytelling. He makes sense of life today through the stories he tells in his works.
Duma is a KwaZulu-Natal-based artist.
Please note the opening of this exhibition has changed due to unforeseen circumstances.
