Depois de um primeiro encontro dedicado a Machado de Assis, a segunda “Jornada sobre Literatura do Século XIX” propõe centrar-se na família enquanto um dos tópicos mais proeminentes da ficção oitocentista, atravessando diferentes nacionalidades, culturas e estéticas autorais. O escopo mais alargado deste encontro permitir-nos-á interrogar o papel da família como lugar de convergência e de tensão, no qual os conceitos de indivíduo e comunidade, íntimo e social, familiar e estrangeiro se conjugam e também se desafiam mutuamente. Assim, propomos observar as “histórias de família” em dois sentidos: por um lado, tentando compreender de que maneira a ideia de família se tornou um objecto central da narrativa em obras literárias do século XIX, e, por outro lado, analisando os meios através dos quais as famílias ficcionais são não apenas baseadas em dispositivos narrativos, como também utilizam esses mesmos dispositivos – sob a forma de trama, intriga ou artifício – para se conceberem e interpretarem a si mesmas e ao mundo que almejam representar. Embora a jornada gire primordialmente em torno da ficção literária, incluirá também reflexões acerca da fotografia e da pintura oitocentistas.

2nd Symposium on Nineteenth-Century Literature: Family Plots

After a first meeting dedicated to Brazilian author Machado de Assis, the second “Symposium on Nineteenth-Century Literature” will be focusing on family as one of the most preeminent topics of nineteenth-century fiction, across different nationalities, cultures and authorial aesthetics. This broader scope will allow us to inquire into the role of family as a site of convergence and tension, where the concepts of individual and community, intimate and social, familiar and foreign are brought together both to meet and to challenge each other. Thus, we propose to look at “family plots” in two ways: on the one hand, trying to understand how the idea of family became a central object of narrative in literary works of the 1800s, and, on the other hand, analyzing the means through which fictional families are not only based on fundamental plotting devices, but also deploy those same devices – in the manner of planning, intrigue, or artifice – to construe and interpret themselves and the social world they purport to represent. Although its primary focus is literary fiction, the Symposium will also include reflections on nineteenth-century painting and photography.
