Transportando-nos a uma era em que a estética socialista era soberana na arte da propaganda política, esta amostra de cartazes da colecção pessoal de Alexandre Farto aka Vhils reune dois núcleos distintos provenientes de duas nações que, durante a segunda metade do século XX, lideraram a vanguarda da revolução internacional: Cuba e Vietname.
Inspirados por várias linguagens gráficas e visuais que marcaram a estética propagandística do século XX, estes cartazes foram criados por uma multiplicidade de artistas empenhados nas causas que ajudaram a promover. Impressos através de meios de reprodução mecânica relativamente baratos e de uso fácil como a serigrafia ou o offset, estas composições simples criadas através da justaposição entre pintura e texto, ou fotografia e texto, espelham uma enorme capacidade de sintetizar ideias complexas em imagens impactantes e imediatamente acessíveis.

Taking us back to an era when the socialist aesthetic reigned supreme over the art of political propaganda, this sample of posters from the personal collection of Alexandre Farto aka Vhils gathers two distinct sets from two nations which, in the second half of the 20th century, led the vanguard of the international revolution: Cuba and Vietnam.
Inspired by various graphic and visual languages that marked the propaganda aesthetics of the 20th century, these posters were created by artists deeply committed to the causes they helped promote. Printed through relatively cheap and easy-to-use means of reproduction like screen printing or offset, these simple compositions created through the juxtaposition of painting and text, or photography and text, indicate a keen ability to synthesise complex ideas into impacting and immediately accessible images.
