PT\\ 1 de Novembro – 599º Aniversário do Descobrimento do Porto Santo A origem do nome “Porto Santo” não é consensual para os estudiosos que se ocupam desta matéria. A este respeito existem duas teorias que, embora diferentes, pouco divergem no que respeita às circunstâncias subjacentes à atribuição do topónimo ” Porto Santo”: a primeira de carácter mais lendário, enquanto que a segunda se sustenta em registos históricos. Segundo a primeira, baseada na versão popular e que remonta a 1418, Zarco e seus companheiros, aquando da sua chegada à ilha, ter-lhe-iam dado o nome por gratidão, visto que esta lhes teria oferecido refúgio no decurso de uma terrível tempestade. Já a segunda versão, historicamente argumentada, aponta para a Baixa Idade Média, segundo a qual, uma embarcação teria encontrado porto seguro nesta ilha, depois de uma violenta tormenta. Quer isto dizer que, antes dos portugueses terem iniciado o seu povoamento, em 1418, já esta pequena ilha era denominada de Porto Santo. Tal facto, entre outros documentos de valor histórico, é constatado no chamado Atlas Medicis de cerca de 1370. Em suma, ambas as teses convergem relativamente ao acontecimento que deu origem ao nome “Porto Santo”, distinguindo-se, todavia, na data e origem dos navegantes que encontraram nesta ilha um porto de salvação, no dia 1 de Novembro. Em comemoração desta data o Município do Porto Santo organizou um seguinte programa de atividades, para o qual o Exmo. EN\\ November 1 - 599th Anniversary of the Discovery of Porto Santo The origin of the name "Porto Santo" is not homogeneous for the scholars who deal with this matter. Respecting the origin, there are two theories which, although different, differ little in regard to the circumstances underlying the attribution of the toponym "Porto Santo": the first of a more legendary character, while the second is based on historical records. According to the first, based on the popular version dating back to 1418, Zarco and his companions upon their arrival on the island would have given it their name in gratitude, since it would have offered them refuge in the course of a terrible storm . The second version, historically argued, goes back to the Late Middle Ages, according to which a vessel would have found safe harbor on this island, after a violent storm. This means that, before the Portuguese began their settlement in 1418, this small island was already called Porto Santo. This, among other documents of historical value, is found in the so-called Atlas Medicis of around 1370. Summing up, both theses converge regarding the event that originated the name "Porto Santo", differing, nevertheless, in the date and origin of the navigators who found in this island a safe harbour, on 1 November.
