Come and hang ten with us on an excellent adventure riding the waves along the beautiful coast of Ericeira, Portugal and watch world class surfers in action at the 2017 World Surf League Men’s Championship Tour. Any level of surfer is welcome, from beginners to advanced. Take 3 days off work, get 5 days packed with adventure!
- About the Trip -
This trip to Portugal is open to everyone and you don’t have to have any surfing experience at all! We expect the group to be mixed ability – so we’ve organised an optional beginner’s lesson with all surfing equipment and beach transfers included. If you’re a more experienced surfer feel free to bring your own equipment if you have it or if you want to hire it all we can arrange that for you too – bodacious!
We’ll arrive in Lisbon on Friday morning or lunchtime and meet our surfing instructors, who will drive us to the village of Ericeira, around 35 km from Lisbon. Ericeira is internationally recognised as Portugal’s ‘surfing paradise’ and in 2011 became the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe, attracting riders from all over Portugal and beyond because of its amazingly consistent surf. It’s a great place to learn – there are loads of beaches at hand ranging from beginner level to more gnarly for the thrill-seekers.
Ericeira town is also a great place to relax on land, offering a wide choice of local cuisines and beachside bars, and because it’s small everything we need is within walking distance. We’ll be staying at a beautiful little boutique hostel 5 minutes walk from town and 15 minutes walk from the beach, with free wifi and a long terrace with incredible ocean views. Once we’ve settled in there’ll be rest of the day to chill out, explore the town or if we’re keen to grab some boards and spend a few hours on the surf.
The next morning our surfing instructors will pick us up and take us to a local beach for a two-hour beginner lesson, where we’ll learn safety procedures in and out of the water and all the basic manoeuvres we need to control the boards. We can hang on to our kit for the rest of the day, so after breaking for lunch we can go back out on the waves – after all, practice makes perfect! In the evening we can venture out into Ericeira town together to sample some local cuisine and maybe even a little bit of beach bar hopping – party on, dudes!
On Sunday we’ll head up north to the town of Peniche to bag a good viewing spot for an action-packed day at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the penultimate stage of the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Men’s Championship Tour. We’ll see loads of professional surfers doing some rad moves through Peniche’s signature ‘super tube’ waves – previous competitions have seen appearances from Gabriel Medina, Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and John John Florence, who won the title in 2016.
