Madeira has unique traditions at Christmas.
One of the most popular and unique to the island are the Missas do Parto or Childbirth Masses. Celebrated for 9 days before the arrival of the Baby Jesus, they symbolise the Virgin Mary's nine months of pregnancy. The mass is sung from the beginning until the end, and is rounded off with big social gatherings in the churchyards at which there's no lack of home-made sweets, traditional "poncha" and liqueurs, among other delicacies.
