Left overs pretende ser uma reflexão sobre a ruína, os restos e os fragmentos das memórias daquilo que ficou fora da cartografia histórica e além das margens da memória. Tudo aquilo que se tentou apagar ou que ficou remanescente do que já passou e não mais importa, seja porque ficou para trás, ou por ter se transformado num arquivo morto ou em destroço sem uso ou lugar. Left overs propõe novas abordagens de reflexão sobre as sombras e os resíduos das memórias pessoais e colectivas culturais de narrativas diversas, em conexão a assuntos como história arquivada, a cidade esquecida, os impérios derrotados, o álbum de família perdido ou as histórias fora do seu lugar. O Workshop segue o modelo da TN, que consiste em reunir um pequeno grupo de artistas (metade nacionais, metade internacionais) para, em conjunto, desenvolverem intercâmbios artísticos durante duas semanas, num formato de residência artística. Nesta edição, os artistas participantes são: João Vasco Paiva (PT | Hong Kong), Andreia Santana (PT), Jérémy Panjeanc (PT | França), Cesar Schofield Cardoso (Cabo Verde), Laila Hida (Marrocos), Leah Gordon (UK). O grupo é escolhido numa lógica de paridade entre géneros e nacionalidades. O objectivo deste workshop é reunir artistas que, para além das suas práticas artísticas, são também activos como produtores culturais e que dinamizam projectos independentes em diferentes geografias. Um programa com conversas, seminário e Open Day, abertos ao público, completam as actividades do Workshop, dando apoio e visibilidade aos trabalhos em desenvolvimento. __________________________________________ Left overs is the fifth edition of Triangle Network workshop held in Hangar. Left overs aims to be a reflection on the ruin, remnants and fragments of memories of what was left out of historical cartography and beyond the edges of memory. Everything that we tried to erase or has remained of the past and no longer matters, either because it was left behind or because it has become a dead archive or a wreck without use or place. Left overs proposes new approaches to reflection on the shadows and waste of personal and collective cultural memories from diverse narratives, in connection with subjects such as archived history, the forgotten city, defeated empires, the lost family album or stories outside its place. The workshop follows TN’s international network model, i.e., gather a group of local and international artists (in equal numbers) for a period of 10 days, allowing them to work collectively and to exchange artistic, process and cultural experiences. The artists participating in the 5th edition are: João Vasco Paiva (PT | Hong Kong), Andrea Santana (PT), Jérémy Panjeanc (PT | France) Cesar Schofield Cardoso (Cape Verde), Laila Hida (Morocco), Leah Gordon (UK). The group is chosen in a logical parity between genders and nationalities. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together artists who in addition to their artistic practices are also active as cultural producers and streamline independent projects in different geographies. Vive e trabalha em Hong Kong. Licenciou-se em Artes Plásticas pela Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto e obteve um mestrado na City University de Hong Kong. Bolseiro da Fundação Oriente, de 2006 a 2008, leccionou na City University de Hong Kong e fez apresentações em universidades dos Emirados Árabes Unidos e Reino Unido. Expõe desde 2008, tendo já realizado exposições em Zurique, Brisbane, Hong Kong, Seoul, Roterdão, Berlim, Nova Iorque, Londres, Pequim, Moscovo e São Paulo, entre outras cidades. Em 2015, foi seleccionado para a Art Basel de Hong Kong e completou uma residência nos Lichtenberg Studios, em Berlim. ANDREIA SANTANA Andreia Santana (Lisboa, Portugal, 1991). Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Licenciada em Artes Plásticas pela ESAD. Participou no Programa Independente de Estudos de Artes Visuais da Escola Maumaus. Vencedora do Prémio Novo Banco Revelação 2016 e do Prémio de Escultura D. Fernando I. Em 2013 esteve em residência na Galeria Mieszkanie Gepperta (Varsóvia, Polónia). JÉRÉMY PAJEANC Jérémy PaJeanc (Paris, França, 1988). Vive e trabalha entre o Porto e a Marinha Grande. Licenciou-se em Artes Plásticas - Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto. É professor no Lycée Français Internacional do Porto (Artes Plásticas e História da Arte) e na Escola Superior de Educação do Porto, nas áreas de Escultura e Cerâmica. Desenvolve investigação sobre a relação entre Arte e Ciência no vidro, campo onde tem direcionado o seu trabalho artístico. Expõe regularmente desde 2009, tendo recebido diversos prémios nacionais e internacionais, entre eles o Prémio Jovens Criadores da Bienal de Cerveira em 2013, em parceria com K. Stepanskyy e Jovem Promessa, na European Glass Context, quando representou Portugal na Dinamarca em 2012. CESAR SCHOFIELD CARDOSO César Schofield Cardoso (Mindelo, Cabo Verde, 1973). Vive e trabalha em Praia, Santiago, Cabo Verde. Dedica-se à fotografia, cinema e media art. Em 2006 lançou o PRAIA.MOV, um movimento de cultura urbana na cidade da Praia, Cabo Verde, em colaboração com arquitetos, artistas e outros pensadores críticos, que marcou a sua produção em torno de questões de cidadania, justiça, espaço urbano e identidades. Em 2009, produziu a instalação de vídeo UTOPIA, sobre o tema da liberdade. ROOT(S), um dos vídeos desse projeto, recebeu o Prêmio do Público e uma Menção Honrosa no Festival Internacional de Cinema do Sal, Cabo Verde, 2010. Participou da Bienal de São Tomé e Príncipe em 2011, para a qual ele produziu o vídeo SPRITU, apresentado também no Museu da Cidade, Lisboa, em 2012. Neste mesmo ano exibiu a vídeo instalação UTOPIA na Galeria Graça Brandão, Lisboa. Cesar Cardoso é co-fundador da plataforma de Cinema Negro www.ficine.org e foi Coordenador do Departamento de Cinema e Media Art do Ministério da Cultura de Cabo Verde entre 2012 e 2016. LAILA HIDA Laila Hida (Casablanca, 1983) Vive e trabalha em Marraquexe. É fotógrafa freelancer e ativista cultural. Fundadora do Le 18 Derb el ferrite, espaço cultural e artístico alternativo localizado dentro da Medina, onde organiza exposições, workshops, encontros e projetos educativos em colaboração com artistas e pesquisadores locais e internacionais. Seus últimos trabalhos centram-se principalmente em retratos e fotografia encenada, representando situações diversas, imaginária, absurda e surrealista. LEAH GORDON Leah Gordon (Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, 1959). Vive e trabalha em Londres. Artista multimídia que trabalha com filmes, fotografia, instalações e muitas vezes esculturas e pinturas comissionadas. Faz projetos curatoriais, pesquisa, escreve e dirige filmes. Modernismo e arquitetura, comércio de escravos e industrialização, religiões de base, histórias de classe e do povo são temas frequentes de seus trabalhos. É co-diretora da Bienal do Ghetto em Port-au-Prince, Haiti, foi curadora do Pavilhão Haitiano na 54ª Bienal de Veneza. Em 2015, Gordon e seu parceiro André Eugène receberam o Prêmio Viagem Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros pela América Central e Caribe. ALEXANDRE ESTRELA Alexandre Estrela (Lisboa, Portugal, 1971). Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Desde a década de 90 Estrela desenvolve a sua produção artística no âmbito da arte experimental. O seu trabalho inicial, radicado nas estratégias conceptuais do vídeo enquanto meio, proporcionou a criação de uma linguagem visual própria. No presente, o seu trabalho remete para um questionamento constante da natureza perceptiva da imagem. Fez o mestrado em Artes Plásticas na School of Visual Arts, de Nova Iorque, e o curso de Pintura na Faculdade de Belas-Artes de Lisboa. Também em Nova Iorque fez uma residência no International Studio and Curatorial Projects (2002-03). Actualmente reside em Lisboa, onde é professor de Audiovisuais na FBAUL desde 2004. Entre outros projectos, mantém uma programação regular de cinema experimental no espaço “Oporto”, em Lisboa. EQUIPA HELICE (Duarte Amaral Netto, João Paulo Serafim, Rodrigo Tavarela Peixoto, Valter Ventura) DUARTE AMARAL NETTO (Lisboa, 1976). Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Estudou fotografia no Ar.co de 1996 a 2000, participou na primeira edição do Curso de Fotografia da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian em 2004 e obteve o European Master of Fine Art Photography no IED Madrid em 2016 (com a bolsa IED). Expõe regularmente desde 2002, quando recebeu o Grand Prix du 48ème Salon de Montrouge, em Paris. Representou Portugal na exposição “100 photos pour l’Europe” em Paris e foi seleccionado para diversos festivais e eventos como “European Night” em Arles (2006) ou Plat(t)form em Winterthur (2014). Em 2012 foi nomeado para a 8ª Edição do Prémio BES PHOTO com exposições no Museu Berardo em Portugal e Pinacoteca de São Paulo no Brasil. É professor de Fotografia no Instituto Politécnico de Tomar desde 2003. JOAO PAULO SERAFIM (Paris, França, 1974). Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Formado em Fotografia e Artes Plásticas no Ar.Co, escola onde lecciona no Departamento de Fotografia desde 1998. Em 2005 participa no Curso de Fotografia do programa Gulbenkian Criatividade e Criação Artística, tendo em 2008 frequentado o curso de História de Arte da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Em 2005 foi vencedor do 3º Prémio Purificacíon García. Desenvolve desde 2005 o projeto MIIAC – Museu Improvável Imagem e Arte Contemporânea, museu ficcionado baseado numa pesquisa iconográfica de um acervo pessoal, construído ao longo do percurso do artista. O MIIAC materializa-se virtualmente ou através de exposições em diferentes espaços, combinando memórias pessoais e colectivas. Colabora ainda com espetáculos teatrais e coreográficos. RODRIGO TAVARELA PEIXOTO (Lisboa, Portugal, 1974). Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Fotógrafo português, expõe regularmente desde 1999, ano em que terminou seus estudos no Ar.Co. Neste ano recebeu uma bolsa da FLAD que lhe permitiu continuar os estudos na SVA, Nova Iorque. Em 2010 concluiu o Mestrado em Artes Plásticas na ESAD.CR. Está presentemente a realizar um Doutoramento em Estudos de Comunicação como Bolseiro da FCT. Desde 2007 lecciona várias disciplinas nas Licenciaturas de Fotografia, Animação Digital e Cinema na Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. Fundou a empresa Resize, realizando trabalhos de Fotografia desde 2001. As suas fotografias estão representadas em algumas das mais importantes coleções portuguesas, como a coleção PLMJ, BES Arte e Fundação EDP. VALTER VENTURA (Lisboa, Portugal, 1979) Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Licenciou-se em História da Arte pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Em 2005, como bolseiro do Banco Espírito Santo, frequentou o Curso Avançado de Fotografia no Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual. É professor especialista no Curso Superior de Fotografia do Instituto Politécnico de Tomar, colaborando também com o Ar.Co, o Atelier de Lisboa e a Faculdade de Belas-Artes de Lisboa. Em 2008, participou (em dupla com José Nuno Lamas) no Curso de Fotografia do 2º Programa de Criatividade e Criação Artística da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Entre 2012 e 2014 foi responsável pela documentação fotográfica no Carpe Diem – Arte e Pesquisa. Curadores convidados ALESSIO ANTONIOLLI Vive e trabalha em Londres. Director da Gasworks, programa de residências, exposições e projectos participatórios com enfoque em artistas emergentes britânicos e práticas e artistas internacionais, Alessio é também Director da Triangle Network, uma rede global de artistas e organizações de âmbito local. As suas funções são de gestão, angariação de fundos e planeamento estratégico da TN, assim como de colaboração com novos parceiros para o desenvolvimento de projectos tais como residências e workshops. Em 2009 Alessio impulsionou o Programa de Partilha de Conhecimentos e Competências, uma série em curso de oportunidades de formação e desenvolvimento profissional para artistas e coordenadores da TN. Alessio é detentor de um MA em História de Arte pelo Birkbeck College, University of London, especializado em questões de internacionalismo, diversidade e políticas culturais nas artes visuais no Reino Unido. JEANNE MERCIER Vive e trabalha entre África e França. É crítica e curadora independente. Co-fundadora e editora-chefe da Africa in Visu, primeira plataforma de intercâmbio em torno da fotografia em África. Formada em História da Arte e Fotografia, em 2005 publicou tese sobre "Encontros africanos da fotografia / Bamako Bienal” e trabalha em novas práticas e formas de divulgação da fotografia na África do Norte e Ocidental. Atualmente divide seu tempo entre a África em Visu e consultorias para programação cultural em torno das práticas fotográficas contemporâneas e as questões dos fotógrafos profissionais em África. Escreve para vários periódicos fotográficos (O Olho da Fotografia, Diptyk, Fisheye Lens Culture). Em 2015, foi curadora dos Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie de Fez. Em junho / julho de 2016, foi convidada pela Cidade de Lisboa para uma residência de pesquisa em curadoria. Em setembro de 2017 será uma das oito curadoras tunisianas para o primeiro festival fotográfico em Kerkenah. Jeanne Mercier é indicadora do Pictet Price desde 2010 e membro do júri do Popcap Prix, Prêmio de Fotografia Contemporânea Africana. _______________________ Resident Artists JOÃO VASCO PAIVA João Vasco Paiva (Coimbra, Portugal, 1979) is a Hong Kong-based contemporary artist. Paiva received a BFA from the Porto Arts Institute in 2004 and an MFA in Creative Media from the City University of Hong Kong in 2008. He is the recipient of the Hong Kong Emerging Artist Grant and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s International Artist Support Grant, amongst other. Has held residencies at Lichtenberg Studios, Berlin (2014) and Connecting Space, Zurich (2015). With a background in painting and advanced training in media techniques, his work is characterised by the appropriation of observed phenomena, mapping apparently random situations and presenting them in an aesthetically organised framework. His work has been widely shown in places such as: Athens, Beijing, Berlin, Budapest, Lisbon, Lyon, London, Moscow, New York, Prague, Rotterdam, São Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai and Sharjah. ANDREIA SANTANA Andreia Santana (Lisbon, Portugal, 1991). Lives and works in Lisbon. Holds a BA in Fine Arts from ESAD School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha and was a participant in the Independent Study Program of Visual Arts from Maumaus School. JÉRÉMY PAJEANC Jérémy Pajeanc (Paris, France, 1988) Lives and works in Oporto and Marinha Grande, Portugal. Hols a BA in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Oporto’s University. Since 2012 Pajeanc teaches Ceramic and Sculpture at the Faculty of Education of Oporto and Fine Arts and History of Art at the École Française of Oporto. At the same time, he develops an investigation about the relation between Art and Science in the glass, field in which his artistic work has been centered on. Since 2009 exhibits regularly in Portugal and abroad. He has won prizes such as ‘Young creators Award’ from Bienal de Cerveira in 2013, in partnership with K. Stepanskyy, and ‘Young Promise’, at the European Glass Context, representing Portugal in Denmark em 2012. CESAR SCHOFIELD CARDOSO César Schofield Cardoso (Mindelo, Cabo Verde, 1973). Lives and works in Praia, Santiago. Photographer and filmmaker, in 2006 he launched PRAIA.MOV, an urban culture movement in the city of Praia, Cabo Verde, in collaboration with architects, artists and other critical thinkers. In 2009 he produced the video installation UTOPIA which considered the subject of freedom. ROOT(S), one of the videos of this project, received the Audience Award and an Honorable Mention at the Sal International Film Festival, Cabo Verde, 2010. In 2011 he was invited to the Biennial of Sao Tome and Principe for which he produced the video SPRITU, presented at the City Museum, Lisbon in 2012. LAILA HIDA Laila Hida (Casablanca, Morocco, 1983). Lives and works in Marrakech. Laila has been a freelance photographer and cultural activist since 2002. By founding Le 18 Derb el ferrite, an alternative cultural space and artist residency in the old medina of Marrakech, Laila has organized, with the collaboration of local and international artists, researchers and cultural actors, exhibitions, series of meetings, workshops and alternative educational projects which all tackle at different levels the major lines of the artist research. Her latest works focus mainly on portraits and staged photography depicting different situations, imaginary, both absurd and surrealistic. LEAH GORDON Leah Gordon (Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, 1959). Lives and works in London. Leah is a multi-media artist who curates, collects, researches, writes and directs. She works across a variety of media including film, photography and installations, often including commissioned sculpture and painting. Modernism and architecture, the slave trade and industrialisation, grassroots religious, class and folk histories are subjects of her work. She is the co-director of the Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; was a curator for the Haitian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale; was the co-curator of ‘Kafou: Haiti, History & Art’ at Nottingham Contemporary, UK; on the curatorial team for ‘In Extremis: Death and Life in 21st Century Haitian Art’ at the Fowler Museum, UCLA and was the guest curator for the 2016 NYC Outsider Art Fair. In 2015, Leah Gordon and her partner André Eugène were the recipients of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean. Invited Artists ALEXANDRE ESTRELA Alexandre Estrela (Lisbon, Portugal, 1971). Lives and works in Lisbon. The films created by Alexandre Estrela unfold as video-installations and projections, which expand spatially and temporally through different supports. With this procedure he configures the image as an entity that cannot be reduced to the field of representation, highlighting its possible material and physical consequences. Estrela is constantly problematizing the elements that constitute the act of seeing, the process of constructing different gazes and the possible splitting of vision into further sensible dimensions. Since 2008 Alexandre Estrela directs Oporto, a program of exhibitions and projects in Lisbon. Since 2005 develops the project MIIAC – Museu Improvável Imagem e Arte Contemporânea, a fictional museum based in an iconographic research from a personal collection, constructed along the life of the artist. Photographer, exhibiting regularly since 1999, he graduated in Ar.Co. and received a FLAD scholarship that allowed him to continue his studies at SVA, New York. In 2010 he completed the Master of Fine Arts at ESAD.CR - Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Communication Studies with Fellowship of the FCT Foundation. Since 2007, he teaches several courses in Photography, Digital Animation and Film Degrees at Universidade Lusófona. His works are present in some of the most important Portuguese collections, such as PLMJ collection, BES Art and EDP Foundation. VALTER VENTURA (Lisbon, Portugal, 1979) Lives and works in Lisbon. Graduated in Art History from Faculdade de Letras (University of Lisbon). In 2005 he finished the Advanced Course in Photography at Ar.Co – Center for Art and Visual Communication, with the Banco Espírito Santo scholarship. Currently he teaches at the Photography Department of Instituto Politécnico de Tomar, also collaborating with Ar.Co, Atelier de Lisboa and the Faculdade de Belas Artes (University of Lisbon). In 2008, participated (in duo with José Nuno Lamas) in the 2nd Photography Course, Creativity and Artistic Creation Programme of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Between 2012 and 2014 he was responsible for the photographic department at Carpe Diem – Art and Research. Guest Curators ALESSIO ANTONIOLLI Alessio Antoniolli is the Director of Gasworks, London, where he leads a programme of residencies, exhibitions and participation projects focusing on emerging UK and international artists and practices. Alessio is also the Director of Triangle Network, a global network of artists and grassroots organisations. He is involved in running, fundraising and strategic planning for the Network, as well as working with new partners on developing projects such as residencies and workshops. In 2009 Alessio instigated the Knowledge and Skills Sharing Programme, an ongoing series of professional development and training opportunities for artists and arts coordinators within the Triangle Network. Alessio received his MA in Art History from Birkbeck college, University of London; specialising in issues of internationalism, diversity and cultural policies in the visual arts in the UK. JEANNE MERCIER Jeanne Mercier is critic and an independent curator . She is co-founder and editor of Africa in Visu, the first photography exchange platform and network in Africa. She has made a statement in 2005 on ”The African Photography Encounters” and is working on new practices and forms of dissemination of photography in North and West Africa. She divides her time between Africa in Visu and cultural programming consulting activities around contemporary photographic practices, and is a photographer of the issues in Africa. She currently teaches in Morocco and France, and writes for various artistic and photographic magazines. She is a regular correspondent for Africa for The Eye of Photography and Diptyk .
