This time around we would like to talk about the transformation of Porto, from a city of a commercial bourgeoisie connected to maritime activity, into a city with an immense rural belt into an industrial and proletarian city.
This period of rapid industrialization is accompanied by something very characteristic: Iron Architecture. Emerging as a construction system at the end of the 18th century, iron played a central role in developing architecture in the 19th and 20th centuries, which allowed a great economy of resources and time, along with great formal freedom and almost unlimited structural possibilities, from bridges to domes and roads. How does that translate in Porto? That’s what we’d like to share with you today, as well as some of the most unique sights in the city as we chase down an old abandoned railway line.
