The exhibition provides a contemporary point of view on the material stone and its portrayal as permanent, monumental and ever- surviving matter - contrasting the current aim of material being as non- present and light as possible. As a consequence it raises the question where to position the medium sculpture in the digital age. The work also relates to the museum as an institution that preserves and presents historical facts as well as creates new images through inevitable interpretation. Educated in sculpture, JUDITH SÖNNICKEN has always been more fascinated by three-dimensionality rather than objects. Her work explores the relation between physicality and space and the intrinsic tension of matter and void. She is fascinated by gravity, electricity, verticality, dimensionality, perspective, holograms and fluorescence. Judith Sönnicken often integrates scientific research in her practice, challenging the Massive, Fixed, Immutable for the Instability of a moving 4th dimension. JUDITH SONNICKEN, born in 1981 in Wickede Wimbern/Germany, is a Berlin-based visual artist. After her studies of Fashion and Fine Arts in Berlin, Paris and Lisbon she graduated as Master of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Berlin in 2010. Her work was exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions since 2005 at Autocenter Berlin, Art Center Los Angeles, Bourouina Gallery Berlin, Lisi Hämmerle Gallery Bregenz, and Klondike Institute of Art and Culture in Canada. She has been in residence at The Barber Shop, Lisbon in 2012.
