Exposição Fotográfica "Glória"

Glória… vocábulo sonoramente feminino, com origem no latim, que poderia significar: esplendor, reputação, ou simplesmente tratar-se do nome de uma bela mulher retratada por qualquer dos artistas que constituem este duo. No entanto, não são estas as únicas três verdades. Para além de uma ermida com mais de três séculos de história, Glória é para estes dois marienses, nascidos na ilha de Santa Maria, o local de origem das suas raízes.

Ligados por um dos mais conhecidos sobrenomes de Santo Espírito, passaram parte da adolescência juntos, quer durante o percurso académico, como no desporto náutico e até numa banda de rock. A arte, desde cedo, esteve presente nas suas vidas. Após o serviço militar obrigatório, que em 1994 forçosamente os fez partir de Santa Maria, é que desenvolveram a paixão pela fotografia.

Ambos enveredaram por fotografar modelos, principalmente nas áreas da sensualidade e do nu. No entanto, e embora as coincidências no percurso dos dois artistas sejam inúmeras, apresentam muitas vezes uma visão diferente na forma como abordam, quer a fotografia, quer a modelo. Se Glória fosse de facto uma mulher e tivesse sido fotografada pelos dois, os resultados seriam com certeza diferentes.

Quaisquer dos trabalhos que integram esta exposição são muito mais que meros registos visuais. Por trás de cada fotografia existe um conjunto de emoções, um intuito, uma história que a torna inquestionavelmente única. Poderem expor os seus trabalhos na ilha que os viu nascer é, sem sombra de dúvida, um momento de Glória.

Glória… a sonorously feminine term for glory, of latin origin, which could be the meaning of: splendour, character, or simply the name of a beautiful woman, portrayed, by either one of the artists who integrate this duo. However, these are not the only three truths. Besides being a chapel with over three centuries of history, Glória, for both these native born of Santa Maria Island, is also the place where their ancestry comes from.

Bound by one of the most common surnames in Santo Espírito, they have spent part of their teenage years together, either throughout their academic journey, as well as in nautical sports and even in a rock band. Art, since quite young, has always been presente in their lives. But only after the compulsory militar servisse, the reason why both left Santa Maria in 1994, their passion for photography fully developed.

Female photography, particularly the areas of sensuality and fine art nude, has been their main line of work. Nevertheless, and besides the numerous coincidences found in the portfolio of these two artists, their vision on how to approach the model, or photography itself, is in several ways different. If Glória was indeed a woman, and photographed by both, the results would certainly be distinct.

None of the artwork integrating this exhibition is merely a visual image whatsoever. Instead, behind each single photograph there is a complex set of emotions, a purpose, a narrative that makes it unquestionably unique. To be able to exhibit their artwork in the Island where they were born, is beyond shadow of doubt, a moment of glory.
