We’re opening a new section of tours! We were not really sure what would have been more appropriate as a name, perhaps calling it a tour, a journey, a walk …a hike as it is rather longer than we tend to do, but the idea remains the same, Porto is an old city, which was first settled some 3000 years ago. However, it was never an inland island, which means that trails have been blazed ever since or even prior. There was but one from the south connecting to the ferry on the banks of the Douro, but as soon as you touched the right bank of the river they stretched out like a sunburst from the old city, some go back to Iron Age tracks, then re-established as Roman roads often consolidated during the Middle Ages, and remade in the 19th century to iron out the wrinkles and kinks which we are to be found when such things happen outside any control or plan. Being this the premise, the first one we want to explore is the Old Road from Porto to Bouças (a territory that you now know by the name of Matosinhos), which cuts a swathe through many of the farmlands of Boavista until entering the region of Bouças, the Galician and Northern Portuguese words for Woods. This road has long been superseded by many more modern thoroughfares, but it’s still there, and we’d love to have the privilege of sharing it with you Tour Language: ENGLISH (will not burden you much with commentary, as we need to keep some pep in our step). Start Point: Rotunda da Boavista, Porto (at the monument, right in front of the coat of arms of the city - see photo below) End Point: Metro Station Real (Matosinhos) Distance: 6,0km / 3.7 miles (not flat, not hilly, but the landscape will sink in smooth depressions and smooth rises as it rolls over soft hills) - dog friendly!
