Em parte esquecida por muito tempo, ela foi a eminência cinzenta da Nova Onda do Cinema Checoslovaco. Ester Krumbachová (1923–1996), a argumentista, designer de produção, figurinista, autora e realizadora, colaborou em filmes essenciais da segunda metade dos anos 60. Apesar de cada filme ser feito por um realizador diferente, juntos partilham conceitos visuais abrangentes e atenção ao detalhe instigados por Ester Krumbachová. Depois da mudança do clima político da Checoslováquia na década de 1970, o seu nome foi colocado numa lista negra e o seu trabalho só voltaria a ser apreciado a partir de 1990, quando os filmes banidos voltaram ao cinema. A sua redescoberta foi apoiada pelo documentário In Search of Ester (2005) criado por Věra Chytilová. Acompanhando este documentário, o programa apresenta o trabalho de realização a solo de Krumbachová, The Murder of Mr. Devil (1970) - uma alegoria irónica sobre a relação entre homens e mulheres. Synopsis: Ester Krumbachová – an artist, screenwriter, director, one of the most important names of the Czech New Wave. She was in the center of the artistic life in Prague in the sixties. The director Věra Chytilová talks to those who knew Ester Krumbachová, cooperated with her, were her friends, loved her, and puts together a picture of an inspiring person. She starts a search which should end with the answer to the question: Who was Ester?
Half-forgotten for a long time, she was the gray eminence of the Czech New Wave. Ester Krumbachová (1923–1996), the scriptwriter, production designer, costume designer, author, and director, collaborated on the essential films of the second half of the sixties. Each film made by a different director, together they shared a comprehensive visual conception and attention to detail instigated by Ester Krumbachová. After the change of political climate in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s, her name was blacklisted and her work could only be appreciated again from the 1990s onwards, when the banned films returned to screens. Her rediscovery was supported by the documentary In Search of Ester (2005) created by Věra Chytilová Chytilová. Alongside the documentary, the program presents Krumbachová’s sole directorial work, The Murder of Mr. Devil (1970) – an ironic allegory on the relationship between men and women. The Faustian story turned on its head written by a female voice is sometimes regard- ed as the first Czechoslovak feminist film.
