Marcioz is a Brazilian artist and composer born in Curitiba, Paraná. Since 2015, he has been releasing different musical projects through labels such as Record Record (Paris), bitbird (Den Haag) and Nurtured Ideas (NY). His projects range from different sounds in South American experimental music, to more melodic-musical practices in European concert music and pop music. Through his mini-label ‘jovemdeu$’, socio-racial processes of Afro-Brazilian miscegenation, mulatagem, colorismo, as well as decolonization, are sonically discussed in his work.
“Entrelaços”
for Repinique, Flute, Voice and Electronics
The piece tries to create new sonic narratives for this instrument called "Repinique" which is very present in afro brazilian culture. It is really known for being present in Samba Carnival bands, which is a space I grew up in playing many instruments (where I learned to play repinique). My piece tries to expand the sonics associated with this instrument, alongside with my flutes. To bring it to a sonic arts space, study the narratives it can also form. I created a series of macros of Max MSP where the computer reacts to what I'm playing, creating this sort of digital duo improvisation. I also work a lot with different scales and tuning systems as it relates to my work with counterpoint during the colonial period in Brasil.
