When the fresh water flows into the Atlantic it is called a “Rio”, when it is the salt water finds its way inland it’s a “Ria”. And very close to us lies the Ria de Aveiro. This is a very unique type of landscape in Portugal and, curiously enough, one that was formed in our living memory rather than geological ages – we will explain how it came about. What is certain is that this unique setting has led to very curious types of ecology, banks of reeds, salt pans, and moliço (a number of varied aquatic and submersed plants that were used to fertilize the fields). Likewise, different areas with different salinity and the silt and mud brought many stilted legs birds, being the storks the most conspicuous but the number is immense.
