DESCRIPTION:

An artist statement is a powerful tool for artists to present their work to the public. It should grab the readers’ attention and make them want to know more about their practices. Whether you need it for a presentation or an application, it is necessary to use an accessible language.

Through this Workshop & Feedback format, you will learn how to write clear and effective Artist Statements. The workshop will provide the basics of writing successful artist statements. After introducing several peer learning sessions and exercises on 16/06, you will be given time to write your own statement and receive tailored feedback in the second session, on 18/06.

Participants will learn through a series of tailored exercises, experimenting with different techniques and formats. We will break down what an artist statement is about + the dos & don’ts, the ideal length, and writing styles.

!! We highly recommend artists to attend both the workshop and the feedback session (workshop & feedback package). That’s a unique opportunity to receive customized feedback and the tools you need in order to build a clear and effective language. !!

WORKSHOP MENTORS:

Alexia Alexandropoulou is a curator and cultural producer based in Lisbon. Her main interests revolve around the intersection of art and social relations and the impact they bring on our environment. She has curated and carried out projects that examine current sociocultural conditions, acting as points for dialogue and understanding. She is a member of Mais Uno +1 curatorial collective and the co-founder of Cross Commons Collective. Since 2020, she has been part of the editorial collective TASAWORAT, an experimental publishing platform with a mission to diversify curatorial practice on contemporary art in North African and Middle Eastern countries. She has been working with several art organizations in countries such as Italy, the Czech Republic, Tunisia, The UK, and Portugal. Alexia holds an MA in Arts Policy and Management from Birkbeck, University of London, and a postgraduate degree in Commissioning and Curating Contemporary Public Art from HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. She is an alumna of TASAWAR Curatorial Studios (2020) and she has been awarded the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Curatorial Fellowship by ARTWORKS (2022).

Inês Nêves is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural programmer from Porto. Stemming from collaborative processes, her work recurs to different disciplines (performance, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, video, urban art, and creative writing) to reach a more holistic and multi-sensorial interpretation of human expression. In her work, Inês investigates performance and plastic arts through an auto-ethnographic process, basing her findings on an anthropological and phenomenological interpretation of body, space, and matter. Inês has exhibited, performed and developed projects in Portugal, Sweden, Spain, and Estonia, in galleries, venues, festivals, and residencies such as: ZET Gallery, Geografía Poética, Estação Sul e Sueste, STARTS.EE, Futureless Festival, Zigurfest, elektron.art, among others. In parallel, she co-founded and/or integrated several collective projects as a curator and cultural programmer, seeking to promote free, transdisciplinary, and experimental common practices, such as: Vent Space Project, mais uno +1, Mart’s Garage Open Artist Residence, or Artists Anonymous. Inês has also dedicated herself to independent research: participating in academic publications, presenting in international lectures and conferences, and integrating the Young Researchers Network KAIRÓS. In 2022, Inês was awarded the “Young Creators National Showcase” Painting prize (Portugal).
