Sean nós is an old style non competitive form of irish step dance. The home of this style of dance is in the west of ireland a place called Connemara.
Steps were passed down from one generation to the next from an older family member, neighbour or friend.
In this introduction Emma will show you steps she learnt this way informally in her home in Ireland.
Sean nos dance is a percussive representation of the Irish music mainly free from choreography.
The dance skill is called "dancing the tune"/ matching the phrasing of the tune. Emma will tell you the history of this skill and why the Irish danced this way hundreds of years ago. You will learn how to interpret the tune for yourself so you can mix and match your steps to suit any tune and dance the old style.
For irish competitive steps dancers the workshop is easy and fun with simple movements on the floor. The appeal of the workshop is learning a very old and authentic dance which was nearly forgotten in Ireland outside of rural regions like Emma's home. it is a piece of history in your dance. She will tell you the history of the dance from medevial times to present day and how the history of Ireland influenced the style and also its links to the sailor merchants of Portugal.
It's a free flowing style of dance with very few rules. We dance in a small space which was the old medieval dance discipline and have a loose upperbody whike keeping our feet close to the floor which was how the Irish originaly danced until the 1700s.
When Emmas has shown you the basics you can create lots of lovely steps for yourself with the knowledge that by doing this you are preserving a once neglected piece of Irish culture which was nearly lost completly and you are helping its revival.
Wear loose light comfortable clothes as with all your dance classes. Afterwards we will make a little video of the material we cover to capture the moment.
