Matéria Doméstica Exótica Exposição individual de Joana da Conceição Inauguração dia 21 de Julho pelas 18h 21 de Julho a 23 de Setembro de 2017 As pinturas de Joana da Conceição são fruto do interstício, que é outra forma de dizer que estão entre estados, entre territórios ou entre estatutos, e que fazem dessa condição a sua força motriz. Por exemplo: as suas pinturas ocupam um lugar entre a figuração e a abstracção e exploram esse espaço dúbio feito de coisas que se afiguram familiares, mas que dificilmente conseguimos nomear. Talvez seja porque nelas desfila um conjunto de motivos arquetípicos que assimilamos intuitivamente, mas cuja interacção encerra subtis enigmas; ou porque as camadas que sucessivamente se vão sobrepondo cancelam, uma e outra vez, tudo o que da ordem da representação lá possa existir... Por outro lado, estas telas estão entre a estaticidade da imagem que inevitavelmente são e a afirmação da pintura como acto performativo, como algo que regista o movimento de um corpo que pensa com e em pintura e que toma decisões como quem joga um jogo em que toda a acção é simultaneamente causa e consequência. Mas talvez mais importante ainda, os trabalhos de Joana da Conceição vogam entre a matriz doméstica da sua escala e da sua natureza intimista e o carácter universal dos seus temas e objectivos. Como se a matéria da pintura pudesse ser o veículo para a expressão de uma verdade cósmica, da ordem exótica e insondável dos fluxos do mundo paulatinamente revelada no recato do atelier. Joana da Conceição nasceu em Rebordões em 1981. Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Concluiu a Licenciatura em Artes Plásticas – Pintura em 2004, e o Mestrado em Práticas Artísticas Contemporâneas em 2008, ambos pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto. Foi distinguida com o Prémio Anteciparte Millenium BCP (2005), viveu por um ano no Rio de Janeiro (2010-2011) trabalhando no Capacete Residências Artísticas com uma bolsa Inov-art e, de volta a Lisboa, participou nas Residências da ZDB (2011) e na Residência Artística Lagamas, promovida pela Cournelius Foundation (2013). Com André Abel fundou Tropa Macaca, duo de composição electrónica contemporânea. For instance, her paintings occupy a place between figuration and abstraction and exploit this dubious space made up of things that seem familiar but which we can’t really name. Perhaps that’s due to their presenting a set of archetypal motifs that we assimilate intuitively, but whose interactions deliver subtle enigmas; Or because of the successively overlapping layers that cancel, once and again, every hint of representation that there might exist ... On the other hand, these paintings lay somewhere between the static quality of the image they inevitably are and the will to uphold painting as a performative act, as something that registers the movement of a body that thinks of and with painting and that makes decisions like one who plays a game in which all action is simultaneously cause and consequence. But perhaps more importantly, Joana da Conceição's works roam between the domestic matrix of their scale and intimate nature and the universal character of their themes and goals. As if painting could be the vehicle for the expression of a cosmic truth, of the exotic and unfathomable order of the inner fluxes of the world, gradually revealed in the shelter that is the studio. Joana da Conceição was born in Rebordões in 1981; lives and works in Lisbon. She graduated in Fine Arts - Painting (2004) and completed a M.A. in Contemporary Artistic Practices (2008), both at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. Joana da Conceição was distinguished with the Anteciparte Millenium BCP Award (2005) and was granted a scholarship (2010-2011) for an artistic residency at Capacete, in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. She took part in ZDB’s and Lagamas’ Artistic Residences (2011 and 2013, respectively) and founded, with André Abel, duo of contemporary electronic composition called Tropa Macaca.
