Fango Quem raios é Fango?, perguntar-se-ão muitos atentos que têm percebido a omnipresença do nome em certos circuitos, actualmente. O italiano foi-se infiltrando pouco a pouco desde 2013 e hoje em dia é praticamente um “buy on sight”, aqueles artistas que nem precisamos de ouvir para saber que um novo tema ou remistura seus terão a qualidade que buscamos. Um perfeccionista obcecado pela maneira como esculpe o som, Fango é sinónimo de Techno avassalador sem ser estupidamente rápido ou agressivo. Ganhando-nos pela repetição simples, os seus bombos e linhas de baixo soam gigantes mas respiram entre si o suficiente para acolherem sintetizadores e ambiências por cima, com espaço para todos os elementos se reunirem a um só propósito. Não admira que Michael Mayer já tenha dito que ele é dos mais interessantes produtores que por aí anda – reconhecimento dos pares não falta, ele que já remisturou Barnt, DJ Hell of Tiefschwarz. Uma ambicionada estreia em Portugal, numa noite em que poderemos absorver as suas escolhas para a dança e mais uma vez assistir à História a desenrolar-se. Missão futuro, ouvidos bem abertos para uma realidade que certamente se constrói através de música que se mostra mais plural do que as suas produções em nome próprio. É que geralmente, quem faz tão boa música tem gosto alargado e influências tantas que mostrar. Atiremo-nos para as presas de Fango! Who exactly is Fango?, many of those who’ve been paying attention lately might ask, aware of the name’s omnipresence in a lot of musical circuits. The Italian artist slowly crawled into the spotlights since 2013 and nowadays he’s practically a “buy on sight”, one of those artists we’l probably buy a record from without even listening to it, certain any new tunes or remixes will be up to the quality standards he has laid down before. A perfectionist obsessed with the way his sculpts his sound, Fango is synonymous with a vast Techno sound that wins us over without being stupidly fast or harsh – instead, he masters the repetition of simple elements, his kicks and basslines sounding gigantic but at the same time leaving enough space for synths and ambiences to be layered on top, all working together. It’s no wonder Michael Mayer dubbed him one of the most interesting producers around, and he’s no stranger to peer recognition, having remixed the likes of Barnt, DJ Hell or Tiefschwarz. A welcomed debut in Portugal, in a night we’ll be able to absorb his DJ picks and once again watch History in the making. Mission: future, with open ears for a reality that builds itself track after track without really being limited to a niche, and instead showing off much more than his tracks as a producer. That’s generally the case with someone who makes such good music. Let us throw ourselves onto Fango’s fangs! Patrice Baumel Patrice Baumel meteu-se nestas coisas das batidas electrónicas em adolescente. Começou a ouvir mixtapes de Gabber como uma espécie de fuga e balanço à sua timidez e estranheza natural – o ano era 1994 e aquelas batidas rápidas e agressivas eram a maior diversão que ele podia ter numa pista de dança. Avancemos uns anos: Patrice mantém-se fascinado pelo futuro e encontra no Techno a expressão perfeita de música que não se conforma com o já explorado. Mas define o seu Techno como algo que vai para além dos fundadores e da visão restrita do género, com o seu amor pela experimentação o e uma mente aberta a permitirem-lhe incorporar influências díspares num resultado final que o levou, slowly but surely, às mais importantes cabines mundiais (e a uma longa residência no infelizmente já desaparecido Trouw). Patrice Baumel não explodiu em popularidade de um dia para o outro, não, pelo contrário assenta a sua carreira em passos certeiros e uma dedicação difícil de igualar. Procurando sempre o contraste entre os sons frios e maquinais e os elementos humanos quentes e naturais, encarna a tarefa de proporcionar ligações – entre ele e o público e com o público entre si - usando a música como meio para um fim em que a figura do DJ não deve ter importância endeusada mas sim ser simples facilitadora para uma grande e divertida festa. Podíamos falar das suas inúmeras edições e remisturas como produtor musical, mas a quasi-omissão é propositada. Foquemo-nos no lado de enorme DJ, que é o que chegará à nossa pista à beira Tejo. Patrice Baumel started getting into electronic beats as an adolescent. At first, he’d listen to Gabber mixtapes as some sorte of escape from his shy personality – it was 1994 and those fast and hard beats were the most fun he could have on a dancefloor. Let’s fast-forward a few years: Patrice’s still fascinated by the future and finds in Techno the perfect expression of music that’s not conforming to what’s already explored. He defines his own take on Techno, however, as something that goes beyond the genre’s founders work and any restrictive views, with his love of experimentation and an ever open mind allowing him to achieve results that took him, slowly but surely, to the most prestigious events in the world (and a residency in the every so important but now defunct Trouw). Patrice Baumel didn’t get a popularity boost overnight, on the contrary he built his career on small and sure steps and a tremendous dedication to his work. Always looking for the contrast between cold machine sounds and the warm natural elements, his job is to make connections happen, both between himself and the crowd and among the crowd itself, using music as the means to an end where the DJ isn’t glorified as a god but as a simple facilitator for a great, fun party.
