- FESTAS DE NATAL E FIM DO ANO / CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS - 2013

PT// É com a inauguração das iluminações decorativas nas ruas da baixa citadina do Funchal, durante o mês de Dezembro, que se inicia o programa das Festas de Natal e de Fim-de-Ano.
Estas comemorações integram um rico e extenso programa de manifestações culturais, religiosas, etnográficas e artísticas que abrange todo o mês de Dezembro e que termina com a celebração do Dia de Reis.
Nesta altura do ano, o Funchal apresenta-se como um verdadeiro presépio, de proporções reais, com as suas ruas enfeitadas com flores e luzes multicolores, que compõem figuras alusivas à época. Nas ruas e praças a música a todos contagia através dos concertos, das actuações das bandas filarmónicas e dos grupos folclóricos. São também variadas as exposições natalícias, autênticos quadros vivos das tradições madeirenses.
Na Madeira vive-se com especial fulgor os preparativos para “A Festa”, cognome que os madeirenses adoptaram para evidenciar o Natal como a sua festa por excelência. Iniciam -se no princípio do mês de Dezembro com a montagem da lapinha e/ou presépio e com a confecção de diversas iguarias e doces, nomeadamente o afamado bolo de mel, as broas, os licores caseiros e a preparação da carne de “vinha -de -alhos”, que resulta num dos pratos mais afamados da culinária madeirense.
Outra das vivas tradições desta quadra, é a celebração das 9 Missas do Parto, que acontecem de madrugada para anunciar o Nascimento do Menino Jesus, acompanhadas de cânticos entoados por populares, habitualmente, no adro das Igrejas, onde se fazem decorações natalícias e se oferecem comes-e-bebes tradicionais da época aos presentes.
No dia 23 de Dezembro realiza-se a tradicional festa da Noite do Mercado, onde os madeirenses aproveitam para fazer as últimas compras de Natal e onde se podem provar os diversos petiscos e bebidas tradicionais da época.
Depois das comemorações de Natal a animação continua, em clima de antecipação das Festas do Fim de Ano com o famoso espectáculo de fogo-de-artifício, reconhecido oficialmente pelo livro de recordes do Guiness , em 2006, como o maior espectáculo de fogo-de-artifício do mundo:
Este magnífico cenário, de beleza rara, é simplesmente único, com milhares de lâmpadas multicolores que enfeitam o anfiteatro do Funchal, transformando-o num palco grandioso. Com as badaladas da meia-noite, do dia 31 de Dezembro, os céus ficam iluminados com cor, luz e esperança num novo ano que se inicia.

EN// The arrival of the decorative lights in the streets of the city centre of Funchal, during the month of December, marks the beginning of the Christmas and New Year festivities.
These commemorations consist of a rich and extensive programme of cultural, religious, ethnographic and artistic manifestations that takes place throughout the entire month of December and ends with the celebration of Twelfth Night.
At this time of the year, Funchal transforms itself into a crib of real life proportions, the streets become decorated with multi-coloured flowers and lights of all sizes, forming shapes and figures allusive to the season. In the streets and squares, everyone partakes in the sound of the contagious music of the concerts, the performances of the philharmonic bands and of the folklore groups, in addition to the Christmas exhibitions, authentic living portraits of Madeirean traditions.
In Madeira, the preparations for “A Festa” (the Festivity) are lived with special enthusiasm, which is the nickname that the Madeireans have given to identify Christmas as their party par excellence. They commence at the beginning of December with the setting up of the “lapinha” (crib) and with the confection of various delicacies and pastries, namely the famous honey cake, corn bread, homemade liqueurs and the preparation of pork in wine and garlic, which is one of the most famous culinary dishes of Madeira.
Another living tradition of this season is the celebration of the 9 Childbirth Masses, which take place at dawn to announce the Birth of the Boy Jesus, accompanied by hymns sung by locals, normally in churchyards, filled with Christmas decorations and where traditional drink and food typical of the season is offered to those present. On 23rd December the traditional Market Night Party celebration is held, where the Madeireans do their last-minute Christmas shopping and where one can savour the various traditional snacks and drinks of the season.
After the Christmas commemorations the high spirits continue, in anticipation of the New Year Festivities, with the famous fireworks display, officially recognized by the Guinness World Records, in 2006, as the greatest display of fireworks in the world. 
This magnificent scenario, of rare beauty, is simply unique, with thousands of multi-coloured lamps decorating the amphitheatre of Funchal, transforming it into a grandiose stage. As the clock strikes twelve, on the 31st, the sky is lit up with colour, light and hope in a new year that is just beginning.
