He was far, far away, from knowing that we would be a part of a new sound that, having emerged from the streets of Angola was mixed with elements from European and American electronic music to create something truly fresh and new. He was even farther away from the reality of this sound being a global success. For him, back in 1998, electronic music was something very limited from his musician’s point of view. And then… there was Drum’n’Bass. “Once I went to a college party in Lisbon, entered the room, and my mind was blown away by the beats and the breaks. That was rock for the dance floor! I danced all night and my musical life changed forever”, says Rui Pité, aka DJ Riot, recollecting his first contact with Drum’n’Bass. After this mind blowing experience, Riot started DJing and producing DnB, as well as playing drums for other projects. He joined Cooltrain Crew, the first and foremost Portuguese DnB crew, and some years later signed what is, to this day, the biggest DnB hit in Portugal: a remix of 80s pop rock theme “Chiclete” by Taxi. The tune hit the radio stations and dance floors like none other DnB track before had done and confirmed Riot’s musical vision of what really rocks a dance floor wherever it comes from musically. This was just the first of a series of very successful remixes signed by Riot that brought pop acts to dance floors relying solely on the power of bass. Most of his remix work came out on a CD compilation, “Cooltrain Crew Southeastern D'N'B Flavas RMXs 2000 – 2006”. Producing DnB, playing it as a DJ, playing drums and producing music with co-partner Lil’John was his life until hurricane Buraka Som Sistema hit in 2006. Even in the midst of an international success story such as BSS, Riot still plays, produces DnB and was able to put is label, Faster Music, on the fast lane. With just two releases, EP’s – “Automan” and “Mermaid Dub” – he has gathered interest from Knowledge mag, the first and foremost DnB magazine; the British DJ Mag where he conquered one place among the Killer Downloads; I-DJ that asked “for more”; and spawn the interest on the Portuguese media. Currently he is playing with Buraka Som Sistema, as a solo artist and still looking for the perfect... bassline!
