ARTIST STATEMENT
"I mostly paint people, although I have been encouraged to experiment with other subject matter and mediums recently, during the course of my visit to Portugal I have settled mostly on portraiture. My work stems from the backbone of a drawing practice.
I want my paintings to look like they could be props in a Wes Anderson Movie. I once saw a painting of a giant moose in the US Ambassador's office in Madrid in 2016 as part of the Art In Embassies Programme, and I remarked to my American companion that morning that it reminded me of the pictures in Eli Cash's house in The Royal Tenenbaums film. She laughed and agreed.
Of course we also know that Jason Schwartzman's character had been painting while brooding over lost love in a Parisian hotel room in Hotel Chevalier, meanwhile there is a grand kerfuffle over Ralph Fiennes being bequeathed 'Boy With Apple' in the Grand Hotel Budapest. I wish my pictures could be thought of as occupying the same vein within art history."

ARTIST BIO
Resident artist at VIC from 30 January to 3rd March 2023, Tom Evans studied Fine Art Painting at Chelsea College of Art in London, graduating in 2000.
Shortly afterwards he was the youngest artist to show at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London in 2001. After a grand hiatus of almost 15 years due to external pressures of existence forcing him to focus on seeking employment and sublimating his creative energy into more commercial discipline, he returned to his practice about 5 years ago when moving back to the UK after a time spent living in Madrid.
Gradually he found his feet with picture making again before last year completing a postgraduate level drawing year online with The Royal Drawing School in London and simultaneously being mentored by the New Art School's contemporary painting programme. He's taken part in several group shows and this will be his second solo presentation of work in recent times.
